The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time Recreation Supervisor in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Summary of Duties

As a Recreation Supervisor, you will:

  • Supervise program, facility and event guests, and enforce rules and safety standards. Ensure equipment and facilities are maintained and in clean and safe condition. Monitor program activities and assist participants in recreation activities and special programs.
  • Market and publicize programs, special events and recreation and leisure services to citizens in accordance with city policy.
  • Interview and make hiring recommendations for vacancies. Train, coordinate, schedule, coach, and evaluate assigned staff; ensure staff maintains safe, playable, and aesthetically pleasing recreation venues and events, as well as adhere to policies and procedures for efficient and safe operations.
  • Responsible for inventory control, initiate and track required purchased materials necessary to operate special events, programs and activities. Order supplies and equipment in accordance with Department policies.
  • Assist and maintain program accounting and administrative records. Develop program, class, and event budgets and monitor expenditures in compliance with City policies/procedure and track expenditures and revenues.
  • Evaluate programs for effectiveness and participation levels. Assist in the development of new programs, and recommend program changes. Track services provided, monitor results, and generate operational reports as needed. Complete all required reports and presentations as needed.
  • Coordinate, organize, schedule, budget, develop and implement recreation activities, programs, events, games, enrichment programs, wellness classes, and special programs. Assure activities are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations, and goals.
  • Maintain good public relations and address citizen complaints in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Supervise operation and maintenance of Imperial Parks and Recreation center (IPRC). Assist in preparation of department budget and monitor department expenditures. Approve administrative requisitions for purchases and maintain the Administration program accounts within budget limits.
  • Oversee the set up and take down of equipment and the preparation of venue for activities and events.
  • Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate must be extremely organized and able to manage the logistics of multiple duties with professionalism and strong communication skills. In addition, strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment is critical for success in the role, as are high levels of accuracy, timeliness and dependability. We are looking for someone who can establish and maintain effective working relationships within the organization, work effectively with all levels of employees and management, and assist in providing solutions to challenges that arise.

You are professional and empathetic. Diligent, take initiative and follow through and follow up with projects. Not easily flustered when tense situations arise but are diplomatic and work hard to diffuse conflict and get to resolution. You identify as a public servant and want to leave the world better than you found it. You work well as part of a team but are not afraid to make tough decisions. Formal Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration, Communications, Business/Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited school or university.

An advanced degree or 4 additional years of exempt-level relevant work experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted in lieu of specific education or experience requirements.

Relatable Work Experience:

  • Municipal experience is a plus.
  • Two years of experience in the Parks & Recreation field, recreation programing, recreation management (or related discipline).

Training (License and/or Certification):

  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Training within 6 months.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver License.
