Your Role . . .
PERSONAL TRAINING MANAGER (Recreation Specialist II) duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Supervision

  • Identify and communicate parameters to subordinate staff for decisions they are empowered to make
  • Handle difficult interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public
  • Report monthly, quarterly and yearly progress of all established goals
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate wellness programs to serve the VB community
  • Set goals and parameters for staff to conduct diverse programs and activities utilizing departmental amenities
  • Responsible for ensuring Personal Training, Small Group Training and outdoor & wellness programming and are effectively planned, coordinated and evaluated
  • Facilitate unit work schedules that are appropriate to the center’s programming and participation needs while remaining within budget
  • Provide leadership/supervision of full-time/part-time employees and volunteers in the Fitness and Wellness Unit to include hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, evaluating and disciplining
  • Oversee multiple recreation centers personal training programming
  • Ensure all Fitness and Wellness programs are offered based on trends and community demands
  • Assist staff with problem solving to facilitate effective program and facility operations
  • Ensure that cost recovery goals are made for the budget year
  • Must possess the ability to promote teamwork, serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment, and collaborate with multiple work units

Budget/Statistics

  • Prepare required reports and documents
  • Project, track and meet revenue and expenditure targets
  • Prepare statistical data for budgetary purposes ensuring completion with accuracy and submitted in a timely manner
  • Monitor part time hours to ensure staff are not working over the allotted number of budgeted hours
  • Monitor and purchase equipment and supplies for Fitness & Wellness program in compliance with city procurement processes
  • Effectively utilize and track resources, including payroll
  • Experience using micro computers (Word, Excel, Outlook and databases for financials/programs

Community Outreach

  • Assist supervisor in identifying opportunities to collaborate with other divisions and departments, including city agencies, schools and community groups

Customer Service

  • Ensure effective and timely communication is utilized to provide accurate information to the public
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms
  • Design training for these standards and establish measures to hold staff accountable or adhering to them
  • Serve as onsite lead for unit
  • Serve as an Alpha I employee and First Responder
  • Provide direct service hours including, but not limited to: fitness consultations, fitness assessments, personal training sessions and small group trainings
  • Must possess the ability to promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment among several work units
  • Ability to lead and instruct staff how to provide excellent customer service while promoting our programs and services
  • Supervise Personal training staff and delivery of excellent customer service
  • Establish standards for front line fitness and wellness subordinate staff to provide legendary customer service

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience as a recreation supervisor; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such positions as recreation supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

May be required to have a current and valid driver’s license.

May require a Commercial driver’s license.

This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.

Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status

Special Requirements for Personal Training Only:
Must possess a current national level personal training certification from ACSM, ACE, NASM, or comparable. Certification must be recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies(NCCA).

Preferences:

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided on the application.
  • Experience in personal training aspect of the fitness and wellness field
  • 1 year of experience supervising multiple staff in the fitness and wellness field, to include hiring, training and performance management
  • National Certification in Personal Training
  • Current First Responder Certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • National Certification in group fitness and/or wellness programming
  • 1 year of budget experience to include expenditure, revenue tracking and meeting established targets specifically with fitness & wellness programs
  • Experience developing relationships with the community and community outreach
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
  • 1 year of experience developing and implementing personal training and wellness programs for individuals and groups

Recreation centers are open over 90 hours per week. The work schedule associated with this position vary to support center programming and include early mornings, daytime, evenings, weekend or split shifts.

The employee’s work location may change based on operational/programming needs.
