About the Department

The Arley D. Cathey Learning Center operates as a study space during the academic year and will be open throughout the day during the winter and spring breaks and during the summer quarter. During the academic year, the hours are 8:00 AM to 11:00PM. During the breaks and summer the learning center is open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The Learning Center has three reading rooms – the main reading room and west tower reading room located in Harper Memorial Library and the north reading room located in Stuart Hall.

Job Summary:
The primary duties of the Cathey Learning Center Receptionist will include monitoring the Learning Center area (main reading and west tower reading rooms in Harper and the north reading room in Stuart) to ensure that the area is a safe and secure environment for students. The Receptionist must be able to handle high and low levels of activity while providing excellent customer service to all patrons of the Center.
Responsibilities:
  • Take hourly headcounts and enter the numbers into the spreadsheet.
  • Arrange furniture and pick up magazines.
  • Take care of the Weisman corner.
  • Coordinate use of storage with the Harper Café staff.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the facility and all plants in the three Reading rooms.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to patrons, staff, faculty, students, and others.
  • Ensure supplies for the printer are maintained and printer functioning at all times.
  • Assist with reconciliation of the awards and other expenses for the College Dean’s office.
  • Other duties will be assigned by the College Dean’s Office during the winter and spring breaks and during the summer quarter.
  • Monitor the Learning Center area (main reading and west tower reading rooms in Harper and the north reading room in Stuart) to ensure that the area is a safe and secure environment for students.
  • Monitor and respond to the needs of students.
  • Provide information about events held at the Commons and services provided in the Commons.
  • Oversee the cleanliness of the Center and report any problems to the College Dean's office.
  • Report any maintenance issues to the College Dean's office.
  • Pick up mail from mail room and display new magazines making sure that the magazines are in proper order on the shelves and submit bills to College Dean's office.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
  • Familiarity with University and its facilities.
  • One year of general office or clerical experience required.
  • Experience in a customer service role in a college or university preferred.
  • Public service experience preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Experience in Mac and PC environments.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Climbing up to 5 flights of stairs.
  • Lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time and work on a computer.
  • Bend, crouch, or stoop.
  • Push carts with up to 40 lbs. of material.
Pay Range:
  • $16.43 - $17.51 per hour.
