Position Summary

This position will provide demonstrated leadership, counsel, technical and administrative support to the Ready Mix operations. Our safety manager and safety program should be described as passionate, participative, innovative, caring, empowering, thorough, responsive and proactive also responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable safety regulations (OSHA, DOT and Martin Marietta policies). This position reports to the Division Safety Director.

This position will be based out of our Georgetown, TX District Office and will support ready mix operations between the Austin and San Antonio, TX areas.

Essential Functions

  • Manage Workers Compensation program and education.
  • Perform audits within the plant to insure compliance in the field, adequate safety administration and record keeping/documentation in the office. Provide feedback and assistance in correcting any issues.
  • Direct Ready Mix Instructors in overall activities.
  • Educate employees in the techniques required to perform effective safety inspections, effective audits and detailed accident investigations we can learn from.
  • Be a personal resource who provides consultation and assistance in problem solving for managers and safety committees by being actively and directly involved.
  • Attend and participate in safety award presentations, luncheons and dinners.
  • Review corporate safety guidelines and policies and adjust as required with safety management approval, make any changes necessary and distribute programs to operations management, safety committees and employees.
  • Schedule medical monitoring programs such as annual audiometric and respirator checks and maintain records.
  • Insure the required annual Guardian Angel (Safety) Refresher Training is done.
  • Lead RCA process and meetings for all incidents/accidents.
  • Utilize your safety peers to help come up with innovative ideas and best practices.
  • Personally, maintain a high level of knowledge of regulations and administrative functions of regulatory agencies such as OSHA, DOT, TCEQ, EPA.
  • Assist management in the research and authorization of appropriate personal protective equipment- engage the employees in this effort. Identify and authorize appropriate sources.
  • Personally, accompany any internal & external inspectors and auditors.
  • Coordinate resolution liability claims and law suits.
  • Analyze available safety metrics, create new safety metrics as required, identify problem areas and design and recommend solutions to problems. Actively engage management and most importantly the employees in the development of solutions to issues highlighted by the metrics analysis.
  • Assign new hires to a safety mentor.
  • Conduct an annual Audit of the emergency response system by review of documents for accuracy. Provide correction as appropriate.
  • Manage incidents, injuries and provide counsel to employees and managers.
  • Actively participate in the preparation of safe job instructions for all jobs and insure they are maintained and updated.
  • Promote Safety in the plant every single day through field time and spot inspections.
  • Act as Safety subject matter expert.
  • Perform safety due diligence and follow-up on abatement of issues and hazards regarding worker’s compensation history and costs, accident history, safety hazards and safety culture.
  • Design training programs, distribute and insure that they are utilized at all plants.
  • Set up an audit schedule and standard work practice consistent with Lean/Continuous Improvement techniques that focus on auditing of the workplace, our 5S practices and results in a regular inspection program of all areas in the facility regarding safety hazards.
  • Audit safety reports performed by safety committees and managers and provide constructive feedback.
  • Present monthly, an analysis of the safety metrics.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional), preferred.
  • 5 Years DOT and OSHA-related Knowledge and Safety Experience
  • Degree preferably in safety related discipline or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5 Years of work in a Concrete, Ready Mix, Aggregate and/or Mine/Quarry operations, or related industry.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Industrial ergonomics experience is desirable but not required.
  • OSHA and DOT regulations and administrative procedures required.
  • Absolutely must be able to spend time in the field on job sites in those areas our employees work. This requires an ability to climb steps and ladders, kneel, crouch, and work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • A good foundation in behavior-based safety programs, self-directed work teams and empowerment.
  • Industrial confined space and Industrial hot work permitting experience is preferred.
  • Ability to write programs to satisfy federal and state regulations, both corporate level and site specific.
  • Ability to develop safety training programs, visual aids and training guides.
  • Ability to relate to employees and managers at all levels of the organization and form relationships with all employees.
  • Thorough knowledge Workers Compensation regulations and procedures in Texas preferred.
  • Ability to conduct training in an effective, participative manner aimed at educating adults. Good verbal communication a must.
  • Computer skills, i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, Word proficiency.

Working Conditions

Works in all weather conditions including heat, cold, ice, rain and in high humidity and is required to work in all plant environments. Incumbent will be exposed to vibrating equipment and mechanical and electrical hazards and heights. May have exposure to dust, cement, clay, gypsum, sand, diesel exhaust, lubricants, solvents, various fuels, etc. (See MSDS’s)
