Radiologic Technologist - Prn

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs radiographic examinations of various anatomical parts and systems of the body in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of physical injuries or medical disorders. Must be certified by ARRT in radiography. In addition, may be requested to train and perform in other modalities, i.e., CT, Mammography, etc. and train and work in clinic settings.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• BLS trained.
• Clerical ability necessary to maintain records, schedule exams, etc.
• Analytical, visual, hearing, and sensory touch acuity ability necessary to determine proper position and exposure factors based on suspected pathology, patient size and age, and other controlling factors.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients, frequently in situations which evoke anxiety or confusion and explain procedures and dispel unwarranted fears.
• Ability to a) apply knowledge of radiologic procedures and technique, b) learn to perform other diagnostic examinations as necessary, and c) become familiar with departmental policies and procedures.
• Completion of a two-year accredited radiologic technology program including course work in anatomy and physiology, radiation safety and hold current registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates all equipment properly and with care. Immediately reports any malfunctions, necessary adjustment or repairs; cleans and makes minor adjustments to machines and equipment.
• Present a professional appearance, demeanor and behavior at all times reflecting a positive image of the Hospital.
• Use technical skills and job knowledge to perform essential tasks in an efficient and effective manner. Is responsible for maintaining and upgrading own knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Performs other related duties as requested.
• Engage in performance improvement projects and activities by identifying areas of opportunity and offering concrete suggestions for improvement and participation in departmental or hospital wide projects and/or process improvement teams. Applies Performance Improvement concepts and methods throughout related activities.
• Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and associates. Demonstrates understanding of and carries out their role in infection control, environmental safety, and emergency and disaster plans. Works in a safe and healthy manner to prevent injury or illness. • Performs first aid as required and assists in cases of adverse reaction to contrast media or in other emergencies.
• Learns to perform ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and/or CT exams, mammograms, angiography, and Dexa, as directed. (See other job descriptions as appropriate.)
• Takes call as scheduled week nights, weekends and holidays.
• Escorts/transports patients into examination area; reviews pertinent patient information; instructs patient concerning the examination to be performed.
• Provides instruction to high school/community college students as requested.
• Demonstrate compassionate care by identifying needs and expectations of internal and external customers and responding to them in a timely and effective manner, anticipating and preventing delays which could negatively affect them and keeping them informed about the status of pending actions.
• Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination of contagious diseases. Observes universal precautions and isolation procedures.
• Follows established digital technique and film processing procedures. Determines diagnosticity of images. Operates PACS.
• Maintains records and/or technical notations of each case.
• Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of work area.
• Perform job responsibilities in a professional, ethical and compliant manner consistent with the Medical Center's values, Code of Conduct, policies, procedures and protocols and all relevant laws, statutes and regulations.
• Demonstrate best judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in the best interest of the patient/customer/organization. Analyze situations, assess risks and benefits of alternative approaches, and act accordingly.
• Considers suspected pathology as reported by a physician and analyzes patients body size, thickness, general physical condition, age and any abnormalities in order to determine proper electronic and technical factors; calculates, selects and measures proper electronic and technical factors such as kilovolts, mill amperes, exposure time, focal-film distances, focal object distance, and focal-spot size. Use only those combinations of factors which safeguard the patient, the x-ray tube and equipment. Selects proper film and accessories.
• Positions patients to obtain and affect the results specified for diagnosis; sets up and adjusts supportive and immobilization equipment and devices as required; applies and adjusts radiation protective shielding to assure that the patient does not receive unnecessary radiation.
• Communicate effectively and appropriately. Uses good judgment as to what to communicate and maintains confidentiality at all times. Treats others with respect and consideration and demonstrates good listening skills. Uses the right tone for the situation and audience.
• Operates mobile x-ray equipment as necessary.
• Performs such clerical duties when necessary, such as answering phones, scheduling, filing, completing daily log entries, transporting patients, and so forth.
• Sets, adjusts, manipulates and controls a variety of complex electronic equipment to apply ionizing radiation for radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations. Also prepares contrast media and assists physician in administering media; administers barium as directed by the Radiologist.
• May be requested to work in outside clinics and perform additional procedures such as performing a EKG, obtaining lab specimens and transporting radiographs, EKGs and lab specimens to WSMC at end of shift.
