Job Description

  • Performs daily equipment warm up and quality assurance procedures on the treatment machines and the CT simulator.
  • Adheres to strict radiation safety guidelines.
  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
  • Position Responsibilities

      Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
      • Implements physician prescriptions and treatment plans as directed by the Radiation Oncologists.
      • Determines the impact of therapeutic interventions on patient conditions and recognizes patient progress toward meeting desired outcomes.
      • Operates therapeutic equipment.
      • Utilizes proper patient identification, positioning, and monitoring during the procedure.
      • Educates patients on procedures, side effects, skin care, and nutrition.
      • Observes patients for physical and emotional changes, side effects, and nutritional needs.
      • Performs simulation procedures and prepares immobilization devices for various treatment techniques, including prone breast, SBRT, and SRS.
      • Monitors clinical progress of patients and refers patients to medical or nursing staff for appropriate intervention.
      • Performs daily equipment warm up and quality assurance procedures on the treatment machines and the CT simulator.
      • Evaluates treatment machine operations and recognizes machine malfunctions.
      • Properly reports machine malfunctions to physics staff and the contracted service department.
      • Adheres to strict radiation safety guidelines.
      • Actively performs procedures regarding quality assurance, emergency shutdown, and guidelines that pertain to the operation manuals for equipment.
      • Communicates clearly with all members of the healthcare team, patients, and visitors.
      • Adheres to quality and safety standards and organizational and departmental policies and procedures to promote positive patient outcomes.
      • Accurately completes and charts all simulation and treatment documentation in the electronic medical records with correct time and date stamps.
      • Covers emergency treatment situations on an as needed basis.
      • Assists Radiation Oncologists in fiducial marker placement utilizing the transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and other necessary supplies and equipment.
      • Performs other assigned duties.

  • Evaluates treatment machine operations and recognizes machine malfunctions.
  • Monitors clinical progress of patients and refers patients to medical or nursing staff for appropriate intervention.
  • Accurately completes and charts all simulation and treatment documentation in the electronic medical records with correct time and date stamps.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
      Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
      • Graduate of a school of Radiation Therapy.
      • Registered in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).
      • Maintains an active Iowa Department of Public Health Permit to Practice as a Radiation Therapist.
      • BLS Certified.
      • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
      Organizational Requirements:
      • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Bachelors of Science in Radiation Therapy from and accredited program/school.
      Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Must possess mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry, and introductory calculus.
      • Ability to make simple judgments regarding variations in work routine or seek additional direction as appropriate.
      • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
      • Ability to deal tactfully with the public and co-workers.
      • Ability to handle confidential work with discretion.
      • Active listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting as inappropriate times.

      • Experience with Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT Scanner.

  • Position Summary
      Responsible for performing accurate delivery of prescribed ionizing therapeutic radiation to adolescent through geriatric patient populations using a variety of complex techniques and equipment under the direction of a Radiation Oncologist. Shares and coordinates key information with other members of the healthcare team through documentation and oral communication. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
