JOB TITLE: Quality Assurance Technician
DATE: 02/02/2020

HOURS: Full-time
LOCATION: Dillon, MT
DEPARTMENT: Regulatory Compliance / Quality Assurance REPORTS TO: Plant Manager, Business Unit Leader

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supporting the local facility quality assurance and regulatory compliance needs, working with RiceBran Technologies QA leadership, and facility and corporate management teams. The Quality Assurance Technician works to assist in assuring wholesome, consistent, best quality products are produced by the local facility, leading in implementing, maintaining, and monitoring compliance to the Food Safety System. Duties include verification of the implementation of system elements, and monitoring system compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a site SQF Practitioner and assist corporate and local management in implementing changes to the facility’s Food Safety System, taking the local Quality Assurance lead in doing so. Assist in developing, revising, reviewing, verifying, and maintaining programs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other food safety system documents in cooperation with the RBT QA team. Assist in maintaining documentation and document registers.
  • Monitor daily personnel and facility compliance to the facility’s Food Safety System. Conduct formal cGMP audits
  • Assure training of facility personnel occurs for applicable Food Safety System elements such as cGMPs, Hazard Analysis, Risk Preventive Controls, pre-requisite programs, etc. as required. Identify new training and retraining needs.
  • Perform microbiological testing, chemical testing, physical specification compliance testing, co-sampling as needed. This may include microbiological tests such as APC, Coliform, E.coli, Yeast, Mold, testing for mycotoxin presence/levels, particle size, etc.
  • Record and submit all samples shipped to outside labs for additional analyses, as needed or requested. Maintain professional relationships with third-party labs used by the facility.
  • Responsible for the collection and analyses of product samples as needed, and the documentation of information obtained from analyses. Product analyses responsibilities can include:
    • Interact with other company personnel as necessary to obtain samples.
    • Perform microbiological testing, chemical testing, physical specification compliance testing, co-sampling as needed. This may include microbiological tests such as APC, Coliform, E.coli, Yeast, Mold, testing for mycotoxin presence/levels, particle size, etc.
    • Record and submit all samples shipped to outside labs for additional analyses, as needed or requested. Maintain professional relationships with third-party labs used by the facility.
    • Maintain special sampling requirements for customers and company, and submit/analyze samples as needed.
    • Maintain facility records of all analytical results. Report results found out of specification to the QA Manager and Plant Manager in a timely manner. Issue

documented reports of analytical results to the Plant Manager, Operations management, and QA Manager. Track and report data trends.
  • Assure maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and general good lab procedures
  • Maintain appropriate QA and lab supplies inventory, ordering supplies as needed.
  • Maintain nutritional analyses data
  • Create certificates of analysis (COAs) for analyzed products as required
  • Appropriately maintain organized, labeled retention samples of all analyzed products and the sample library log.
  • Assist in reviewing facility process control and sanitation process control monitoring records as assigned. Report any identified process control or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) deviations or potential hazards to the Plant Manager and the QA Manager.
  • Monitor sanitation efficacy in the facility, including but not limited to visual inspections and swabbing
  • Assist in implementing and updating facility Sanitation Plans in cooperation with QA management and facility management
  • Monitor magnet and metal detection systems performance and calibration
  • Assure all finished product is placed on hold immediately after production, pending required analyses. Assure finished products are released from hold when completed analyses are within specification, rejected for commerce, and disposed of appropriately when analyses are out of specification.
  • Inspect incoming raw materials as needed
  • Assist with product nonconformance and complaint investigations
  • Lead facility team self-audits
  • Maintain communication with third party pest control contractors servicing the facility
  • Ensure appropriate water testing is done
  • Maintain QA-related SDS library
  • Assist in meeting applicable regulatory, company, and customer requirements
  • Assist in hosting facility visits by customer representatives, regulatory agency representatives, and other visitors
  • Serve as the primary host for third-party auditors of the facility
  • Assist in maintaining applicable certifications, such as Organic, Kosher, Hallal, and Non-GMO
  • Serves as primary GFCO contact, with Plant Manager as the secondary, backup contact.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Experience in a food processing facility
  • Knowledge of basic microbiology analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of HACCP, Hazard Analysis and Risk Preventive Controls, and cGMP’s. HACCP certification and/or Preventative Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) training preferred
  • Competent computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Self-starter and a motivated leader
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties on a daily basis
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Good situation analysis and problem-solving skills

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience in a food processing facility
  • Familiarity with a food laboratory environment beneficial
  • Familiarity with food facility cleaning and sanitation operations beneficial

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field, with strong preferences for a degree in Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Agriculture or related discipline.

Required Experience:

  • Experience working with food safety programs, hazard analyses, preventative controls, and cGMPs
  • Microbiology analyses experience
  • 1-3+ years prior experience in food safety, quality assurance, or food processing role with a food manufacturing facility or lab

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently (5-10 times) during a shift
  • Standing/walking up to 80% of each shift
  • Able to work in hot/cold, dusty conditions often with no supervision.
  • Able to climb at least 50 feet on vertical ladders
  • Able to operate lab equipment as required.
  • Ability to sit at a computer station and use a computer for extended periods of time.

OTHER RELEVANT JOB INFORMATION

  • Must be team-oriented, but also able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to interact positively with staff and others from outside the company.
  • Must be able to accommodate occasional schedule changes. Must be able to work overtime and on weekends and/or holidays, occasionally on short notice.
  • Must be available for occasional travel.
