Job Description
The City of Ojai is now accepting applications for the Public Works Maintenance Worker I position. Under general supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair, and installation of public works services in City buildings, facilities, streets, parks, and rights-of-way; and to maintain storm drains, traffic systems and signs, and public works equipment.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


Maintenance Worker I --This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Examples Of Important And Essential Duties


Maintain, repair, and install a variety of public works services and equipment at public facilities and buildings, parks, and rights-of-way.


Set, form, pour, and finish concrete to repair curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks; lay asphalt; build fences; open and close graves.


Repair and/or assist in cleaning and repairing storm drains, catch basins, and storm drain pipes; perform weed abatement duties.


Operate a variety of tools and equipment including bucket truck, backhoe, dump truck, tractor, skiploader, paint striper, riding mower, rototiller, blower, edger, and truck.


Perform routine preventive maintenance and equipment checks on assigned equipment; notify appropriate personnel of equipment deficiencies.


Respond to emergency calls for service from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, replacing street signs, emergency patching of streets, and repairing water and sewer lines.


Perform a variety of landscaping activities in City parks and City rights-of-way areas; mow, edge, spray, clean, tend flower beds, and trim and prune trees, bushes and hedges.


Make minor repairs to City facilities; paint; remove graffiti; wash windows; perform other routine maintenance functions.


Conduct routine inspections of assigned work areas and equipment including parks, playground equipment, and irrigation systems; make repairs as necessary; perform general custodial work on such areas including cleaning and sweeping walks and parking areas and cleaning rest rooms; perform rodent control tasks; empty public trash receptacles; replace park and rest room supplies as necessary.


Prepare facilities for scheduled activities; open, close, lock, and secure facilities; coordinate facility use; follow facility schedule.


According to established procedures, purchase materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete a maintenance or repair task.


Perform dead animal recovery duties from public streets and other areas.

Maintenance Worker I


Knowledge Of


Principles and practices of construction and maintenance technology.


Proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment including the operational characteris­tics of light and moderately heavy motorized equipment.


Safe driving principles and practices.


Skill To


Learn to operate a variety of public works maintenance, repair, and construction equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.


Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.


Operate a motor vehicle safely.


Ability To


Learn, interpret, and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.


Learn occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of streets, parks, and facilities maintenance, repair, and construction.


Learn materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in streets, parks, and facilities maintenance and repair.


Learn grounds maintenance methods and care of trees, plants, flowers, and shrubs.


Learn to read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifica­tions, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.


Ability To


Perform cement and masonry work.


Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and tools.


Understand and follow oral and written instructions.


Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications


Experience:


One year of experience performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction and equipment operation work.


Training


Equivalent to a high school diploma.


License Or Certificate


Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B driver's license.


Depending upon assignment, possession of a playground, pesticide or herbicide certificates.


Special Requirements


Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:


Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.


Compensation & Benefits


Salary: Maintenance Worker I: $22.83- $27.76 p/h


Deferred Comp: ICMA; City matches lesser of 3% of salary or $200/month.


Retirement: City participates in California Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security.


Health, Dental, Vision, Disability: Participation in PERS health plans; City pays 100% employee nd 80% of dependent premium up to PERS Choice rate; City pays 100% of employee premium for dental and vision. City paid short- and long-term disability and life insurance.


Holidays: 13 Holidays


Vacation: Initial 88 hours per year with subsequent additions for longevity.


Sick Leave: 96.0 hours per year.


Life Insurance: City paid, $30,000 Life plus ADD


Post-Employment Benefits Program: Employees hired after Nov. 1, 2010, who work 10 years continuously and retire from the City, will be eligible to participate in the CalPERS health plans after retirement; City pays the "Employer Minimum Contribution" toward the retirees' premium.


Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Ojai Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly
