Job Description

INTRODUCTION:

The Racine Public Library has been a part of the Racine community for 125 years, and counting. Since 1897, we have grown from a single reading room in a downtown building to a two-story community gathering place that services the Racine community east of Interstate 94. In addition to our building, we also have a Bookmobile and a pair of book bikes that stop throughout the community, as well as outreach libraries and a home delivery service.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Racine Public Library is a learning institution. It is expected that all employees be flexible, responsive to change, and take a leadership role when necessary. Employees will contribute to a positive customer experience with the public and co-workers. Essential duties may change in response to evolving community needs. This position supplements the Adult and/or Youth Services reference staff when full-time employees are on leave due to illness, vacation, continuing education, etc. This position is responsible for assisting the public in using the library's resources, and for accessing resources outside the library when the local collection is not sufficient to meet the patron's needs. This position reports to the Head of Adult and Youth Services.

This is a part-time position, with a variable number of hours per week.

Essential Duties

ESSENITAL DUTIES:

  • Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Manager of Adult and Youth Services.
  • Provides public reference service in the Adult and/or Youth Services Departments to individual’s in-person or by telephone.
  • Participates in planning new services and in setting policy for the Adult and/or Youth Services Departments.
  • Works on special projects as assigned by the Manager of Adult and Youth Services.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • The position requires intensive interaction with the public, at a busy service desk

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Flexibility and commitment to providing outstanding public service.
  • Ability to effectively supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and easily, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability and stamina to physically perform all the necessary tasks assigned.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Must be exceptionally reliable and have demonstrated reliability in prior work or lived experience.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the retrieval of information through online databases, CD-ROM, and the Internet
  • Willingness to learn current techniques and methods in providing reference services for adult and/or youth, including the use of an integrated online library system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the public, other staff members, supervisors, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Ability to use personal judgement to effectively problem-solve.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION:

  • Reaching, standing, kneeling, sitting, bending, keyboarding, lifting heavy books, talking, listening, grasping, reading, writing, resting a phone receiver on the shoulder.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Computer workstation, photocopy machine, calculator, radio paging system, telephone, fax machine.
