Job Description

Hybrid - Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time but the general expectation is the employee be onsite an average of three (3) days each week.

The Role

The Director, Federal Affairs, will be responsible for policy development and advocacy before the U.S. Congress and other federal government agencies and will report to the Executive Director, Federal Affairs. In this role, they will be part of a dynamic team advocating for GM’s business interests, implementing key strategies, strengthening critical relationships with Members of Congress and their staff- as well as other key stakeholders – working aggressively and strategically on multiple issues of critical importance to GM. This position is crucial for creating and communicating an integrated government relations strategy to pave the way for GM’s business success and growth. Responsible for operating and managing a large political action committee (GM PAC); will plan and direct all related activities. Manages state and regional government relations by collaborating with relevant executive and legislative branches as well as key regulatory agencies.

What You’ll Do

  • Establish and maintain a sophisticated “insider” political network of PAC professionals and Capitol Hill staff, as well as interact with associations, and other related groups involved in policy development
  • Help conceive and develop a strategic plan designed to assist General Motors as it relates to public policy issues at the Federal and State level
  • This position is also responsible for advocating for public policies and regulations that align with the entire business organization; therefore, this position should collaboratively work with other functions of the business – including Legal, Communications and Engineering – to ensure that the company's overall interests are protected.
  • Direct and handle all GM PAC activities, including day-to-day PAC management and operation, budgeting, check requests and disbursements, employee solicitation, member event planning, communications, and compliance reporting
  • The individual filling this position will lead advocacy initiatives and execute strategy on a number of substantial issues, and he/she should be capable of understanding how these issues impact the automobile industry and GM’s particular business model. The individual will be required to develop and implement plans to successfully achieve specific results regarding public policy issues in Washington that are favorable to the interests of GM.
  • The complexity of this job is high, and the individual will need to provide sound counsel and support to GM's senior leadership, which will be key to GM's future success in the U.S.'s legislative and regulatory climate.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Ability to drive strategy on critical issues of importance to GM
  • Keen political acumen and sound political judgement
  • Ability to initiate and proactively identify opportunities to better position GM in Washington and with critical internal and external constituencies
  • 5-10 years of Government Relations/Capitol Hill/Public Policy/Lobbying experience
  • Ability to identify and mitigate challenges to the company
  • Background/expertise in sustainability and diversity is a plus
  • Accomplished oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with significant attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in public policy, communications or business, or equivalent experience

Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is: $150,600 - $231,200. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position

Bonus/Equity Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
