Departmental Overview
The Ethnic Studies Library, an Affiliated Library under the Department of Ethnic Studies, includes four core collections: the Asian American Studies Collection, the Chicano Studies Collection, the Native American Studies Collection, and the Comparative Ethnic Studies Collection. The Ethnic Studies Library serves the needs of the Ethnic Studies (ES) faculty as well as students majoring in Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, Ethnic Studies, Chicano Studies, and Native American Studies. In addition it serves ES graduate students, students fulfilling the American Cultures course requirement, other students enrolled in ES courses, and local, national and international scholars. Many of the Ethnic Studies Library's archives are known world-wide and attract national and international scholars and researchers
Responsibilities
Archival Processing: Arrangement and description of archival materials according to national archival standards. Develops, arranges, and describes the archival collection in accordance with accepted standards and practices. Preservation: Acts as liaison with librarians, archivists, and other staff in applying the Ethnic Studies Library's preservation protocols. Creates finding aids in accordance with national and library standards. Develops, arranges, and describes archival collections in accordance with accepted standards and practices. Limited monographic and serials processing. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Advanced professional knowledge enabling the performance of a full range of coordinating, and/or highly specialized functional subject area activities. This knowledge may be acquired through considerable library experience, possibly in combination with specialized training and skills or relevant academic preparation. Advanced knowledge of applicable systems and databases. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to address highly complex or specialized solutions. Advanced interpersonal skills to deal with a variety of people and situations, including providing guidance and leadership to other library professionals. Advanced knowledge of library data transformation techniques and software tools. Assists with the implementation of new technology as needed.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience processing archival materials, including audiovisual materials. Experience creating detailed archival finding aids. Experience in archival description and authoring of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids. Familiarity with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS). Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize work. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Formal archival or library school education with demonstrated knowledge of current standards of archival processing and preservation practice. Familiarity with written (simplified and traditional) and spoken Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) as well as the Pinyin Romanization system. Familiarity with and/or formal education in Asian American and Chinese American history. Familiarity with conservation and preservation issues related to audiovisual materials, including those on legacy or obsolete formats.
Education/Training:
Masters in Library and Information Science and/or equivalent experience/training,

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000.00 FTE ($40,500.00 is the part-time rate).
This is a 12-month, 45% part-time (18 hours per week), limited (temporary) position that is eligible for UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly. This role is primarily on-site.
