Job Description
POSTING NUMBER: #1682
POSITION TITLE: Program Manager I
CLOSING DATE: Until Filled
LOCATION: Remote, USA

The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health, well-being, and quality of life for people throughout California, across the nation and around the world. As one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the nation, we are at the forefront of research and innovations to improve the efficacy of public health statewide, nationally, and internationally.

Position Summary

CAMI Health, a program of the Public Health Institute (PHI), is looking for an energetic self-starter to join our tight-knit, dynamic team. The Program Manager I will support the CaSE (Capacity Strengthening and Mentorship Engagement) Program, which is a component of a MATRIX (Microbicide R&D to Advance HIV Prevention Technologies through Responsive Innovation and eXcellence), a USAID-funded cooperative agreement. Other responsibilities may include supporting CAMI Health projects in alignment with our mission to improve the health of women and girls worldwide, as funding allows.

MATRIX is designed to expedite research and development of products for the prevention of HIV in women (https://matrix4prevention.org). MATRIX’s scientific and operational priorities include equitable leadership and representation by stakeholders in East and southern Africa as well as the US, to advance products that meet the diverse HIV prevention needs of adolescent girls and young women, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and female sex workers in sub-Saharan Africa who face a disproportionate burden of HIV. MATRIX is comprised of 18 partners organizations and product developers working together to inform and accelerate early R&D for new HIV prevention products by providing an innovative ecosystem in which early-stage HIV prevention technologies can be advanced.

The CaSE Program focuses on strengthening capacity of early to mid-level scientists in product development from post-drug discovery through late-stage Phase 1 to support HIV-prevention product development in east and southern Africa. The vision for impact by the CaSE fellowship program includes increasing end-user product choice through products developed hand-in-hand with African researchers, policy makers, and regulatory authorities.

The CaSE team consists of representatives from the Aurum Institute (Johannesburg, South Africa), the Kenyan Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) (Nairobi, Kenya), the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Harare Health and Research Consortium (HHRC).

The ideal candidate will be an organized, detail-oriented, motivated, and flexible worker who balances effective leadership through the provision of clear direction and support with meaningful collaboration amongst team members. The Program Manager’s role will be to develop and administer short and long-term training programs aimed at strengthening the capacity of scientific research and development (R&D) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Key responsibilities will include:

1) management and administration of several scholarship and fellowship programs. The Program Manager will monitor and oversee a cohort of up to 40 scholars and fellows annually who are admitted into the programs as well as coordinate and oversee alumni activities and community-building events to enhance learning and networking opportunities;

2) overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of CaSE programs; and

3) liaising between fellows, mentors, institutions, and consultants from various institutions (e.g., academia, research institutions, industry) to develop training opportunities.

This position is remote and is 100% FTE (40 hours/week). This position may involve domestic and international travel to sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Zimbabwe, or South Africa) to attend conferences/meetings and conduct other work activities as needed (estimated to be 3-7% FTE). It will require occasional early morning calls outside regular business hours.

Full salary range for this position: $80,043 to $118,302 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $80,043 (minimum) to $99,173 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.
