Job Duties:

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center seeks a lead educator to join the School & Youth Programs team. This position would serve as the lead educator for camps, birthday parties, scout groups and overnight adventures. Additionally, this position provides standards-based programs to schools throughout the year. The ideal candidate enjoys engaging youth in hands-on experiences both indoors and out and has a passion for making science and nature experiences meaningful, memorable, and fun.

Duties of the Programs Educator I - School & Youth Programs include the following:

  • Plan and conduct Summer and School Year Camps.
  • Plan and conduct Birthday Parties throughout the year.
  • Plan and conduct overnight and daytime events for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts that meet badge and patch requirements.
  • Basic administrative tasks such as, but not limited to, tracking payments, program registrations, and answering phone calls, confirmation emails and using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Conduct standards-based programs for pre-K through Grade 12 students in the Aquarium's classrooms, at schools, in the field and virtually.
  • Assist in the development of new school and scout programs and revision of existing ones.
  • Greet school groups arriving for Aquarium visits.
  • Assist with conducting teacher trainings.
  • Coordinate the work of volunteers assisting with school and youth programs.
  • Collaborate with the School & Youth Programs Specialist and other team members in developing strategies and actions that keep up with changing interests and trends in youth programming.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on current workloads and section needs. Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed to meet operational requirements.

Work schedule: 40 hrs/wk. Typical schedule is Tuesday – Saturday (May switch to M – F during camp season).

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities such as marine or earth science, education, museum studies, and aquarium or zoo studies. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

The ideal candidate for the Educator I for Onsite Programs will have the following experience, background, and abilities:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral presentations and in writing.
  • Experience interacting with people from a range of backgrounds and ethnicities.
  • Experience with basic administrative tasks such as tracking payments, program registration and the use of word, excel and outlook.
  • Academic background at a college level in science, in particular biology, earth science, environmental science, or marine science.
  • Experience conducting programs to youth audiences in: an aquarium or similar informal education facility; a formal classroom setting; or Scouts or other organized youth groups.
  • Experience collaborating in a team environment.
  • Experience conducting programs with live animals.
  • Experience conducting outdoor programs.
  • Ability to complete assignments independently.
  • Experience providing customer service.
  • CPR certification.
