Position:Program Coordinator

General Description:

The Program Coordinator is responsible for implementing programming focused on intersectional storytelling, older adults, youth, tobacco cessation, and support and discussion groups. This position will be an important connection point across programs to help facilitate effective referrals for community members. Under the supervision of the Programs Manager, the Program Coordinator may act as Task Supervisor for interns. The ideal candidate has experience in similar programming and community work and has strong organizational and communication skills while working well on a dynamic, diverse team.


This is a full time, salaried position ($38,000 - $42,000 per year) with a generous benefits package, including health, dental and vision, 401k (employee contribution only), life insurance, vacation time, and sick time. This role has a five day work week with some remote work available.

Required Qualifications:

  • A learning mindset and collaborative spirit
  • Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills
  • Highly organized with ability to keep accurate records and manage multiple competing priorities
  • Personal and/or professional experience with the LGBTQ+ community and a demonstrated ability to use affirming language and pronouns
  • Background in human services, social work, community engagement, youth development, or related fields
  • Cultural humility and a strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion along with an understanding of intersectionality


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience serving the LGBTQ+ community
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and ability to learn and create new systems and processes
  • An understanding of the impact of trauma on individuals and communities and an ability to apply a trauma-informed approach to programming and community engagement.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work within the budgets for each program to make necessary purchases and document purchases according to Affirmations’ financial policies in a timely manner.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with the rest of the Affirmations staff, organizational partners, and community members.
  • Develop new programming for older adults in collaboration with the Programs Manager, other staff and interns, and community partners like SAGE of Metro Detroit.
  • Serve as an administrator of the Discord server for youth and ensure a safe environment for all youth participants. Support the onboarding and training of volunteer/intern administrators of this server and address any issues that arise
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned
  • Assist in implementation of existing youth programming, including the Youth Leadership and Job Readiness Program, and support a strategic vision of building new programming and events focused on LGBTQ+ youth of all ages including an in-person Youth Drop-in Space.
  • Work independently and with discretion as it relates to job responsibilities and decision making.
  • Implement the Intersectional Storytelling Programwhich seeks to increase the representation of diverse stories and identities within the LGBTQ+ community in Michigan through events and workshops.
  • Serve as the point of contact for Affirmations’ Support and Discussion groups and work with the Programs Manager and community members to add new groups. Deliver training for facilitators and ensure all groups are safe, inclusive, and affirming. Provide support for facilitators when issues arise and work with the Programs Manager to address issues.
  • Implement smaller programs such as Tobacco Cessation, focusing on advocacy and providing community support.
  • Work with the Programs Manager and other staff to regularly monitor and evaluate the programs to identify and implement improvements, especially as it relates to diversity, equity and inclusion.
