Job Description

Basic Function

Under close and frequent supervision, performs work within the Laborer classification. All new hires start in this classification until assigned out by the company or accepting a bid to another position. This position may be assigned out to other departments as needed with proper training and testing for any task assigned to perform. Positions in our bargaining unit work multiple shifts with some being 24/7 shift rotations.

Job Duties

  • Train and mentor new employees and new transfers into the department on job tasks.
  • Complete general maintenance tasks with the use of small hand tools.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties throughout the plant included but not limited to cleaning, painting, rearranging, landscaping, snow removal, etc.
  • Follow the rules and regulations for the assigned department and the plant.
  • Carries out assignments with other departments as applicable. If temporarily assigned to another department in accordance with the CBA, employee will perform the tasks of that position once properly trained to do so.
  • Work with a strong attention to quality standards.
  • Show commitment to learning the job tasks.
  • Report possible and/or actual safety hazards.
  • Perform work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures of the job.
  • Assist with calibration of equipment as necessary.
  • Communicate openly and honestly with the supervisors and trainers.
  • Perform confined space, supplied air cascade bottle attendant, and hot work duties for plant employees and contractors as needed.
  • Generate, handle, and/or otherwise manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
  • Responsible for learning the jobs, showing initiative, remaining productive and engaged.
  • Assist employees in maintenance department in the completion of their duties by performing minor helping tasks for which they are trained to perform.
  • Transport and deliver materials, packages, samples, etc as required throughout the plant.
  • Maintain a clean work environment throughout the facility.
  • Operate forklifts and aerial lifts both indoors and outdoors.

Experience

Prior experience in industrial maintenance or operations is required. Preference will be given to prior experience working in operations or maintenance in a chemicals facility.

Education Level

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Prefer additional training and education post-high school such as a trade school, college or other education relevant to maintenance, production or manufacturing.

Required Skills

Basic knowledge of commonly used math, spelling and writing. Basic ability to learn and understand maintenance, production and manufacturing concepts. Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to perform common calculations and measurements. Basic computer abilities in order to communicate by email and locate necessary files for the job.

Work Conditions

Industrial/Chemicals/Plant based manufacturing environment Subject to varying road and weather conditions and required to work in all temperatures including out-of-doors. Work near moving mechanical parts and/or rotating equipment. Must be able to work at heights.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceive color differences. Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces. Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (facial hair is not permitted in many production and maintenance positions), ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential. Climbing stairs and ladders.
