Job Description

Schedule: PRN positions available following 10-month calendar school year. SUMMERS OFF!

Start Date: July 17th, 2023 orientation for the 2023/2024 school year will begin.

Hiring Range: $35.00/hour

CHA requires employees to be up to date on all vaccines, including flu and COVID vaccines, and provides vaccination for staff. Vaccines must be up to date, or you must be willing to update them upon hire.

The PRN nurse will complete special assignments delegated by the school health administrators, assist school nurses in meeting the needs of their school community and act as a substitute school nurse. The school nurse temporarily assumes the roles of provider of student health care and planner/coordinator of the school health program at the assigned school. During times of nurse vacancies, PRN nurses are required to work a minimum of 8-hours per month to remain an active CHA employee.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administers medications, treatment plans and/or specialized healthcare procedures per medical provider's orders
  • Trains staff and supervises activities
  • Initiates referrals to parents, school staff and community
  • Delegates procedures in a manner consistent with the NC Nurse Practice Act and supporting position statements
  • Counsels and educates students concerning chronic health conditions, mental health issues, substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision making
  • Ensures secure storage of medications
  • Provides identification, assessment, planning, interviewing and evaluation of student health concerns, interprets health status of pupils to parents and school personnel and will assure that appropriate documentation of school health activities is complete
  • Respond to supervisor calls and/or voicemail within 48 hours
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records
  • Serves as liaison between school, home and communities
  • Assigned to fill-in at a school, functions independently and must demonstrate autonomy in decision-making and practice

Education/Experience: One of the following must be met:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN): Graduation from an associate degree program for nursing. Minimum of 3 years of relevant nursing experience required. ADN prepared nurses must provide proof of enrollment in a BSN program within two (2) years from their first date of employment. Experience in school nursing, pediatrics, emergency department or home health preferred.

License: A valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Current CPR certification.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs
  • Some ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of others
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health, working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to healthcare, working knowledge of available resources and organizations
  • Accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgement in appraising situations and making decisions
