Job Description
Summary:
Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group is looking for a Press Operator I to join the team! This is a development position that formally introduces a Reel Tender 3 to functions necessary to succeed as a Press Operator. Although exposure to ink and water occurs in the Reel Tender stages, this is the level that allows ongoing development. You will work in the art of ink and water balance, as well as maintaining and adjusting color registration. As a Press Operator I, you must maintain the skills developed at the Reel Tener level and applied as necessary to support the operation.
What you will do:
  • Set process color, identify and correct registration issues on multiple process color leads
  • Re-web the press as needed, and check color ink against color proofs, press to press and utilization of Spectrodensitometer for Graybar accuracy
  • Communicate verbally with associates and management regarding work processes
  • Develop the skills needed to maintain a running folder
  • Unit cutoff, margins and intro into unit to unit compensation
  • Participate in the cleanup and the complete set up of the presses providing education and/or assistance as necessary
  • Assist in training associates on different functions within the pressroom
  • Develop the skills needed to manage back-to-back (comic) process configuration
  • Assist in performing duties of all other press jobs when necessary to cover for breaks and unexpected events
  • Perform unit (ink couple) set up, which includes reading the run sheet, setting the ink, water and rails and webbing the press
  • Assist Press Operator Leads by paging out the paper, monitoring ink and registration, gray bars, and correct ink
  • Develop the skills needed to start or restart a hot press on an as needed basis
What you will bring:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Specific vision abilities including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Can properly plate and remove plates, remove and install blankets, and purge black and color ink rails
  • Ability to read and understand mark ups for page location and color positions on all runs
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Experience as a Reel Tender, Press Operator or prior press experience required
  • Must be willing to work the night shift, weekends and holidays
  • Exhibit competency in press console operations
  • Competency in achieving ink and water balances, and density targets during press runs
  • Ability to stand, bend, climb, reach and kneel repeatedly during a 8 hour shift
This is a fully onsite, night shift role in Riverside, CA.
The hourly wage is $24.00 - $27.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
