Job Description
The Position

The Water Resource Recovery Operations and Services Department is currently seeking multiple Plant Maintenance Technicians. Positions will be located at our Durham and Rock Creek facilities. This position performs maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery in wastewater treatment plants, buildings, pump stations, and water quality laboratories.

Essential Functions

(The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this classification. The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion. Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions.)


  • Troubleshoot and perform reactive mechanical repairs, replacements, and modifications on high cost/high risk mechanical equipment located in District treatment plants, pump stations and labs such as pumps, boilers, bar screens, clarifiers, centrifuges, digesters, filters, and blowers. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment to extend life and reliability or monitor current condition.
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs, replacements, and modifications on HVAC/R equipment and systems. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on mechanical and electrical maintenance in a non-licensed capacity; perform chemical testing and maintenance of treated water loops.
  • Perform Essential Functions listed under general supervision with responsibility for independently determining appropriate sequences, methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Complete maintenance and repair records; requisition and/or purchase parts, tools, and supplies as needed.
  • Schedule work to be performed by the work team, make assignments to team members, review team members' work, provide feedback to supervisor as necessary, handle after hour emergencies when required.
  • Based on assessment of cost effectiveness, recommend repair vs. replacement, in-house vs. out-sourced repair.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Sealings and lubrications
  • The parts, functions, and repair procedures for pumps, pipes, valves, motors, and related industrial mechanical equipment
  • Advanced mechanical principles and practices for repair and troubleshooting of industrial equipment, parts, and machinery
  • Bearings and bearings surfaces
  • Pertinent safety procedures and practices
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic principles and practices
SKILL IN:
  • Maintaining accurate and complete maintenance records
  • Advanced welding and fabrication
  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems
  • Advanced plumbing and pipefitting
  • Lifting, hoisting, and rigging
  • Use of computers and computer software for the following: scheduling, data management of the computer maintenance and management systems (CMMS), reports and office applications: training, and evaluating the work of other maintenance personnel
  • Use of precision measuring devices

ABILITY TO:
  • Plan testing procedures
  • Recognize and determine the best method for correcting a wide variety of malfunctions
  • Troubleshoot a wide variety of malfunctions
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Determine the proper kind and type of parts and equipment needed for system installation and repair
  • Read and interpret plans, equipment specifications, operations and maintenance manuals, blueprints, sketches, and shop drawings
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Electrical and Instrumentation, Operations and those contacted in the course of work
  • Operate effectively in a team environment
  • Understand and follow complex written and oral instructions
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledges, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

2+ years of experience in mechanical trades such as plant maintenance technicians, millwrights, machinists, plumbers, pipe fitters, welders, or building maintenance technicians affording achievement of competency with mechanic's tools; measuring equipment; and maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide variety of mechanical equipment.

Trade classes in mechanical engineering technology, or related fields.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
Upon selection, all candidates must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver's license.
