ChampionX, located at the Boulder Municipal Airport (KBDU), Boulder, CO, is hiring a commercial, instrument rated Pilot to conduct scientific research flights as part of a small but growing team of pilots and scientists. Scientific Aviation operates modern, glass cockpit Mooney M20 aircraft to conduct atmospheric research, and is in the process of adding multi-engine aircraft to the fleet. Pilots can expect overland low altitude survey flights following terrain to maintain specified above ground level (AGL) altitudes, as well as flight locations offshore, over mountains, and in Alaska. Typical flight duration is 4-6 hours. This is a full-time position that includes health/dental insurance, paid time off, and 401(k). Flexibility to travel is an essential requirement of this role.
What you will do:
  • Work with Director of Maintenance to plan scheduled aircraft maintenance and coordinate unscheduled aircraft maintenance at home base and while on projects.
  • Plan project-specific logistics including FBO coordination, ATC/airspace coordination, and hazard report assessments of locations prior to project deployments.
  • Ensure correct project-specific equipment and tools are on aircraft before departing for projects.
  • Learn and execute basic operation of science equipment and data acquisition software onboard research aircraft; perform basic troubleshooting of scientific equipment as needed.
  • Assist with loading/unloading of scientific equipment.
  • Safely conduct flights as Pilot-In-Command under Part 91 in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations and company procedures.
  • Work closely with supervisor and other manned aircraft program team members to understand science goals of each flight/project, and actively and constructively participate in planning of flights to accomplish these goals.
  • Travel frequently in North America, and potentially overseas, to scheduled projects with the aircraft. Project duration is typically between 3 days and ~3 weeks. Mobility and schedule flexibility are essential for this position. Travel ranges seasonally from 25-75% of the time to locations throughout North America, potentially abroad, and can include weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Complex aircraft endorsement•350 hours total flight time
  • Valid U.S. Passport and Driver’s License
  • Commercial Airplane Single-Engine Land certificate
  • Ability to work in a small team environment and take on other tasks as needed to achieve mission goals.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Instrument Airplane Rating
  • 1st or 2nd class Airman’s Medical
  • Must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screen; subject to random drug screens during employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff and customers while planning or executing projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 50 hours multi-engine time
  • High Performance endorsement
  • Garmin G1000 Experience
  • Commercial Airplane Multi-Engine Land certificate
  • 100 hours in Complex aircraft
  • 600 hours total flight time
  • Certified Flight Instructor license, with Instrument and/or Multi-engine ratings
