Position Overview:
The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate (PTC) non-credit program provides hybrid (classroom and online) instruction, laboratory simulation, and clinical site placement to train phlebotomy technicians. The program includes topics specifically related to phlebotomy, such as human body systems, obtaining and handling blood specimens, laboratory tests, blood collection equipment, safety and preparedness, infection control, venipuncture, dermal (capillary) puncture, special phlebotomy procedures, and other related skills. Program participants also learn about practicing professional behavior, Berkshire County community health resources, and professional career pathways related to phlebotomy.
Face-to-face instruction is provided on the Berkshire Community College campus twice a week in three-hour sessions (total 69 hours). Face-to-face instruction will include interactive lectures, group work, case studies, panel discussions, and simulation laboratory work with phlebotomy equipment.
Online instruction is provided asynchronously through Moodle, the Berkshire Community College learning management system (LMS), and McGraw Hill Connect system. There is a total of 21 hours of online instruction that includes asynchronous discussions, work with learning materials, and other online methods of teaching. The instructor provides general supervision of student placement at clinical sites, collects all reports and assessments related to clinical placement, and provides two three-hour online or in-person consultations for material review as students prepare for their NHA exam.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
Current certification in phlebotomy from national credentialing agency (ASCP, ASPT, NHA, or equivalent).
At least three years of phlebotomy experience in the last five years.
At least three years of work in health care in the last five years with experience directly related to clerical duties, electronic health records maintenance, and clinical procedures routinely performed by a phlebotomist.
Experience mentoring phlebotomists in a health care setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in allied health or related field.
Current Medical Lab Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification.
Experience mentoring and supervising phlebotomists in a health care setting for three years.
At least five years of phlebotomy experience in the last seven years.
At least one year of allied health teaching experience in higher education.
Familiarity with learning management systems such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard.
