Job Description

MedStar Pharmacies, Inc. has a rare part-time position (approximately 24 hours per week) available in our outpatient/retail pharmacy on the campus of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Must be able to work two weekday shifts of 8 am - 6 pm per week, and 8 am - 4:30 pm weekend rotations.

Evaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions, ensuring accurate input, labeling, and dispensing; and, provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. Education
  • Licensed as a pharmacist in the District of Columbia (DC) required
Experience
  • 1-2 years Pharmacy experience, preferably in retail required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) license from American Red Cross or America Heart Association (AHA). required
  • Current DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that state or district. required and
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt, and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rx's requiring pre-authorizations and discusses alternatives as appropriate.
  • Performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary; maintains refill and narcotic logs, and prescription files.
  • Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications; handles DURs, rejects, preauthorizations, etc.; communicates with third party payors to troubleshoot issues relating to coverage, reimbursement, etc.
  • Provides patient counseling as appropriate on a patient-by-patient basis.
  • Acts as the pharmacist in charge in the absence of the manager: directing workflow patterns, ensuring daily responsibilities are carried out by assigned staff, resolving issues requiring management intervention, and performing routine oversight of pharmacy operations.
