Summary: The Personal Care Attendant is responsible for maintaining the delivery of health related items to the residents within a facility. The PCA assists in developing, coordinating and performing the tasks on the service plan according to the resident's preferences and abilities during their assigned shift. The PCA is a member of the personal services staff and is responsible for assisting the resident in all areas of care as assigned by the Resident Care Coordinator or Executive Director. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Displays mature behavior and attitude in speech and action; demonstrates consistently pleasant demeanor, tone of voice, supports the philosophy and approach to care used by the facility.
  • Documents care given; adhering to facility policies and procedures.
  • Is free of non-treated communicable disease.
  • Requires minimal supervision. Is a self-starter.
  • Is able to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and universal precautions.
  • Performs all other related duties assigned by Resident Care Coordinator or Executive Director. Job Qualifications:
  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control via proper handling of equipment, soiled linen, bedpans, urinals, and adequate hand washing.
  • Is accurate, dependable, neat and thorough in assigned tasks.
  • Has ability to spend long periods on feet and to ambulate quickly.
  • Performs resident care with an awareness of dignity and individuality, with understanding and concern.
  • Adheres to and conveys the philosophy of Assisted Living. Has awareness and practices in accordance with the regulations of the state.
  • Assists with activities of daily living, environmental orientation, vital signs, simple treatments, and other care.
  • Avoids loss, breakage, and waste of supplies and equipment.
  • Escorts residents to and from dining room while encouraging residents to find their own way per service plan requirements.
  • Provides laundry and housekeeping services to residents as assigned.
  • Receives report from the previous shift.
  • Reads shift-to-shift report and shower schedule for information and changes before coming on shift.
  • Observes any changes in resident physical or mental status and communicates to RCC and Executive Director as directed.
  • Performs unpleasant tasks with grace; works cooperatively with supervisors and displays willingness to assist co-workers.
  • Keeps work areas neat and clean; helps maintain appearance of facility.
  • Ability to utilize and apply basic management skills. Other Requirements:
  • Maintains service plans. May participate in Service Plan reviews.
  • Relieves at front desk, providing constant coverage for call and alarm system, as well as clerical and secretarial support as requested.
  • Maintains physician's orders in accordance with policy.
  • Organizes and utilizes time appropriately; sets priorities and accomplishes assigned tasks.
  • Keeps resident information confidential; respects resident's rights; respects privacy and right to self-determination of residents.
  • Assist with serving meals and dining room duties as instructed.
  • Communicates appropriately with physicians, Resident Care Coordinator, Executive Director, outside health care agencies and others as appropriate. Utilizes communication tools as per policy.
  • Maintains resident record for each resident including but not limited to, obtaining current physician orders, clarifying orders, and alert charting.
  • Is thoroughly familiar with fire, missing persons, and other emergency procedures, follows facility policy and procedures detailed in fire and disaster plans.
  • Maintains clean, neat, comfortable, safe environment for residents, staff, and visitors including housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Assists with resident activity programs as assigned.
  • Consistently complete documentation using appropriate tools in accordance with policy.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Has familiarity with willingness to work with elderly population. Previous experience preferred but not necessary. EOE M/F/D/V
  • Ability and willingness to learn quickly.
  • Documents in shift-to-shift report book and ADL binder before going off shift.
  • Reports deficiencies observed in resident apartments, clothing/linen and facility to RCC and Executive Director. Completes Incident Report form as needed for any unusual occurrence.
  • Maintains acceptable attendance record; notifies supervisor if late or unable to work in accordance with personnel policies; follows work schedule.
  • Assures doors are locked and alarmed (if applicable) at all times.
  • Wears name tag at all times.
  • Abides by established policies and procedures of facility. Looks for ways to improve facility functioning.
