Penn Medicine Pennysylvania Hospital Psych Unit is seeking a Per Diem Patient Care Tech!

Patient Care Technician delivers patient care that is patient and family centered. Incorporates team focused, collegial relationships to ensure patient safety and improve outcomes. Maintains organizational competencies of superior quality care, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. Demonstrates accountability to the patient, family, self and the healthcare team. Provides superior quality care and assumes responsibility and accountability for their role in performance outcomes while supporting Pennsylvania Hospital's Relationship Based Care Model.

This position provides support across all Behavioral Health units at Pennsylvania Hospital. A description of each unit is listed below.

4 Spruce
4 Spruce is a 24-bed secure inpatient unit at Pennsylvania Hospital providing comprehensive, acute, short-term assessment and treatment for adult patients with a wide variety of psychiatric symptoms and conditions. The service works closely with many mental health and social service agencies and private providers to meet the medical and social support needs of patients returning to the community.
The goal of treatment of 4 Spruce is to stabilize patients quickly and to reintegrate them into supportive outpatient communities.
6 Spruce
6 Spruce is an 18-bed secure inpatient unit at Pennsylvania Hospital that provides comprehensive psychiatric treatment for adult patients with mood and anxiety disorders and geriatric patients 60 years and older with all types of psychiatric illnesses. The unit also specializes in treating patients whose psychiatric illnesses are complicated by active medical problems. The goal of treatment on 6 Spruce is to treat and stabilize patients and discharge them to appropriate outpatient care.
Hall Mercer Crisis Response Center
Hall-Mercer Community Behavioral Health Center provides comprehensive outpatient services to Philadelphia residents in need. As part of Philadelphia’s Behavioral Health System, it is one of 11 community mental health centers, and has one of Philadelphia’s five Crisis Response Centers onsite.
As the first outpatient community mental health center in Pennsylvania, Hall-Mercer distinguishes itself from other community-based services through its affiliation with Pennsylvania Hospital and Penn Medicine. This special relationship offers immediate access to a wide range of behavioral health programs and some of the area’s most recognized clinicians. It is the only program of its kind connected directly to a teaching hospital in Philadelphia, which facilitates access to a comprehensive spectrum of clinically renowned behavioral health and medical services.
Reflecting the needs of today’s behavioral health consumers, Hall-Mercer provides a range of services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness. While Hall-Mercer provides support to a wide range of individuals, it maintains its primary mission to care for the underserved. It takes this responsibility seriously, and over the years, has moved beyond its original service area in the south-eastern section of Philadelphia to provide care to people across the city and its surrounding areas.


Responsibilities:

  • Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.
  • Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.
  • Timely notification and escalation of data or clinical data/information
  • Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.
  • Demonstrates support of quality and safety measures in the work environment, e.g., demonstrated support of the unit's Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) goals
  • Demonstrates a genuine care for the patient, e.g., active listening and responding, gentle approach to providing care, knock then identify yourself before entering a patient's space, provide timely information to patients in a caring manner; ensure an individualized approach to care to include cultural sensitivities, anticipate patent needs based on dialogue and observation
  • Demonstrate safe patient handling skills, proper hand hygiene
  • Ensure actions and behaviors demonstrate their support in creating a positive, caring and healing patient environment
  • Consistently focus on improving the patient experience
  • Provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising. Assist patient in their independence (when appropriate), preserving the patient's dignity while providing care.
  • Active participation in daily RN/Patient Care Tech handoffs and unit huddles
  • Communicate with patients to ascertain feelings or need for assistance or social and emotional support.
  • Collecting and recording vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates flexibility/change in assignments based on patient acuity and unit needs


Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts of Science from an accredited program in an area of human services
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required) plus two (2) years of direct care experience in the human service field or completion of 12 credits in an accredited program in an area of human services or nursing
