Job Description

The Patient Advocate at the Utah State Hospital (USH) works directly with patients to ensure that their rights are protected. They respond to patient complaints and provide an avenue for grievances, advocate for patient rights, and work with the various treatment teams to intervene on the patients behalf.
Example of Duties

  • Negotiates or mediates issues with internal and/or external agency representatives, and/ or concerned outside parties or their representatives. Settles or resolves issues or complaints.
  • Coordinates and refers services of community resources, placement providers, collateral agencies, the court, and/or other community partners with families, clients, or patients receiving services.
  • Refers patients to other available services to meet needs where appropriate.
  • Visits, counsels, and advises patients and their families.
  • Provides patients with information concerning rights, options, benefits, services, goals and expectations.
  • Communicates with others regarding inmate's/client's/patient's status and progress to provide education, guidance, case management and follow-up.
  • Acts as a resource to team members, participates in team and professional meetings and gives input as to needs of clients.
  • Interprets, clarifies, explains and applies agency policy and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws and regulations, etc.
  • Collects and reviews patient information to determine eligibility and options.

The perfect applicant for this position has:
  • A proven track record of giving excellent customer service and/or patient care.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and clerical skills.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, codes, court procedures, precedents, regulations, rules, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill.
  • A patient, empathetic, and helpful attitude; the ability to help other people feel comfortable in an unfamiliar or stressful setting.
