Job Description

Schedule A: $4,300 – $5,300 dependent upon experience for program completion or prorated accordingly for portions of program worked.

Schedule B: $2,500 – $3,500 dependent upon experience for program completion or prorated accordingly for portions of program worked.

Youth Education is seeking a passionate individual to join the team as a PATHS Summer Counselor. The PATHS Program prepares prospective first-generation students from under-resourced communities to achieve their full potential in high school and beyond. You will work with groups of students from diverse backgrounds in the Salt Lake Valley as they explore the University of Utah’s campus and higher education opportunities. Join us this summer and be part of a fun, dynamic team that enriches the lives of high school students.

PATHS Counselors will work with three cohorts of 25 students in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade for a week-long day camp and a residential camp at the University of Utah. On campus, they can gain academic and life skills, practice self-advocacy, and build a lasting learning community.

PATHS Camp Counselors are critical to the program and the success of our students. Counselors are leaders, mentors, educators, and advocates for PATHS students and others. They supervise youth during all the activities and overnight camps, teach and lead camp activities, develop and coordinate lessons, and act as positive role models.

Responsibilities

1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of students during activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended outcomes
  • Assures students are properly supervised at all times
  • Be aware of and enforce safety guidelines
  • Apply basic youth development principles such as relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth while working with campers


2. Develop and implement activities for students in accordance with the program mission
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned
  • Lead and teach camp electives and activities
  • Provide appropriate activities for individual and group interests and abilities
  • Plan and prepare elective lessons or activities to engage students as needed

3. Maintain high standards of health and safety for students and staff
  • Be alert to students and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with camp director when appropriate
  • Provide care for each student within your supervision, including recognition of one’s own personal health needs
  • Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance is adhered to; report necessary repairs promptly to camp director

4. Be a role model to students and staff in your attitude and behavior
  • Set a good example for students and others including cleanliness, punctuality, personal language, appearance, health habits, sportsmanship, and manners
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures

5. Represent PATHS when interacting with parents, University of Utah staff/faculty/students, and community members
  • Provide participant guardians appropriate feedback and information as needed for their students to have a successful camp experience
  • Follow safety and security protocols when students are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp

6. During residential camps, stay overnight in the dorms with students.
  • Supervise students after classes have ended. Maintain a safe environment in the dorms and ensure students are following curfew hours


Minimum Qualifications


  • Be physically able to accompany the students to any of the camp activities
  • Must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate or equivalent
  • One year of previous experience as a group counselor or staff member in a camp or other youth program
  • Have auditory ability to respond appropriately to hazards and any student concerns
  • Current CPR and first-aid certificate (this training will be provided)
  • Be able to communicate verbally with students and provide instructions
  • Be able to observe student behavior in daily life, to respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior
  • Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting as well as physical symptoms of student injury or illness
  • Valid driver’s license


Preferences


  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Ability to assist in or teach an activity
  • Desire and ability to work with junior high and high school students outdoors and in the classroom
  • At least 21 years old or older
  • Majors in human development, education, social work, psychology, or other related fields
  • Good character, integrity, relatability, and adaptability
  • Experience working with children in grades K-12 as a leader or assistant leader
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Respect for diversity and enthusiasm to work will culturally diverse students from underrepresented backgrounds
