Job Description
Class Summary

Under general direction is responsible for design and construction of city parks, recreation facilities, and other landscaping projects.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
  • Prepares detailed cost estimates for new construction and rehabilitation projects for parks, and recreation facilities, median islands, and other related projects
  • Reviews plans, specifications, and construction for conformance to approved standards
  • Calculates estimates of materials and costs, prepares detailed drawings and specifications, directs draftsmen in the preparation of final plans and maps
  • Designs, and makes detailed plans for all phases of park and median island construction, including automatic irrigation systems, landscaping, playgrounds, buildings and recreation facilities
  • Writes reports in connection with various park projects
  • Prepares preliminary design and estimates for determining budgetary needs for construction and maintenance activities
  • Prepares applications for State, Federal and other funding
  • Confers with other city staff regarding design and alterations of new and existing facilities

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Park improvements, including playground equipment and sport courts
  • Local horticulture requirements
  • Principles, methods, materials and practices of landscape architecture including design, site planning, construction and maintenance
  • Automatic irrigation systems including booster pumps

Ability to:
  • Adapt landscape projects to space limitations
  • Write concise reports and maintain effective working relationships with other city divisions, departments, contractors, and the public
  • Prepare landscape architectural plans and specifications and to direct and coordinate the design, construction and maintenance of landscape projects with officials
  • Prepare grading plans,

Training and Experience:
  • One (1) year experience in landscape design, OR;
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture or Architecture, And;

Licenses, Certificates or Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license

Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
  • Standard office environment and working conditions

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a single position class distinguished from Park Technician in that the Park and Landscape Designer has the responsibility for park design and drafting while the Park Technician has the responsibility to implement the construction and installation of those plans once they are finalized.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement website for additional information.
