Job Description
The Position


The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Park Attendant, PT (Part-Time) vacancies within the Public Works department.


Under immediate supervision, the Park Attendant (PT) uses a full range of technical level skills to perform a variety of routine duties including tree trimming, garden maintenance, ballfield preparation, loading debris; and perform related duties as assigned.


This is an at-will position, exempt from the provisions of the City of Oakland Civil Service Rules, per Charter Section 902.

Examples of Duties


  • Assist in clearing out lines and catch basins; picking up litter and cleaning walkways, paths, and tennis courts; loading and unloading soil and other materials; transport trash to dump.
  • Prepare ball field by leveling the infield, watering field to abate dust and mark foul ball and batters' box lines; check condition of field, home plate, bases and pitcher's mound for safety.
  • Weed lawn and planted areas.
  • Perform heavy manual labor excavating and leveling earth with hand tools.
  • Assist in planting and maintaining annual ground covers, trees, shrubs, flowers and turf.
  • Drive, load and unload vehicle.
  • Support skilled workers in tree trimming, root pruning, reshaping, planting and removal work; sweep, rake and clear ground; remove stumps and tree hazards; cut limbs and trunks into pieces; split firewood; salvage fallen timber.
  • Assist in pruning and trimming shrubs and hedges; trimming trees; cutting and removing weeds; raking and clearing grounds; mowing and edging turf areas in park and golf courses.


Minimum Requirements For Application


Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable.


Education: Equivalent to the completion of the eighth grade; high school diploma or equivalent desirable.


Experience: None required.


License Or Certificate / Other Requirements


Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment.


Other Requirements


Employees assigned to ball field preparation will be required to work irregular hours and weekends.


Knowledge And Abilities


Knowledge of:


  • Basic mathematics.
  • Use of hand tools and maintenance equipment.
  • Safe work procedures.
Ability to:


  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; work with community, volunteers and court assignees.
  • Operate mowers, hand and power tools, field liner and other equipment.
  • Learn to use a personal computer, mouse and keyboard; perform simple arithmetical calculations.
  • Perform work requiring physical strength and agility in various weather conditions; lift up to fifty pounds.
  • Drive 1/2 to 3/4 ton pickup; or automobile.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Prepare brief, accurate oral and written reports relating to work performed.
