GENERAL SUMMARY: The Paramedic is responsible to provide high quality emergency and non-emergency advanced life support and transportation to patients while providing exceptional customer service. The Paramedic is certified to operate an emergency vehicle and provides prehospital advanced life support (ALS). The standard of practice of the Paramedic shall be in accordance with the most current edition of the US DOT "Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic: National Standard Curriculum", as modified by the NYS DOH and NYC REMAC.

Description Of Duties

• Assists with lifting, carrying and properly loading patient into the ambulance.
• Assesses and monitors vital signs and general appearance of patient for change.
• Determines appropriate medical facility to which patient will be transported.
• Uses appropriate body substance isolation procedures.
• Must demonstrate competency in assessment of a patient, handling emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques.
• Visually inspects for medical identification emblems to aid in care (medical bracelet, charm, etc.)
• Asks for medical direction from medical control physician and carries out medical control orders as appropriate.
• Transports patient to medical facility providing ongoing medical care as necessary enroute.
• Checks all equipment for future readiness.
• Properly cleans contaminated equipment according to established guidelines/policies.
• Provides additional emergency care following established protocols.
• Assists in moving patient from ambulance into medical facility.
• Maintains familiarity with all specialized equipment.
• Communicates with dispatcher requesting additional assistance or services as necessary. Determines nature of illness or injury.
• Avoids mishandling patient and undue haste.
• Must be knowledgeable and competent in the use of a cardiac monitor/defibrillator and intravenous drugs and fluids as per protocol.
• Assesses the safety of the scene, gains access to the patient, assesses extent of injury or illness.
• Must be capable of utilizing all EMT-B skills and equipment.
• Extricates patient from entrapment.
• Observes all traffic ordinances and regulations.
• Must be able to perform under Advanced cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) standards.
• Reads maps, may drive ambulance to emergency site using most expeditious route permitted by weather and road conditions.
• Reports verbally and in writing observations of the patient's emergency and care provided.
• Makes determination regarding patient status and priority for emergency care using established criteria. Reassures patient, family members and bystanders.
• Must be able to use a semi-automatic defibrillator.
• Responds to calls when dispatched.
• Must be able to perform CPR, control bleeding, provide non- invasive treatment of hypo-perfusion, stabilize / immobilize injured bones and the spine, manage environmental emergencies and emergency childbirth.
• Uses prescribed techniques and equipment to provide patient care.
• Replaces supplies, properly disposes of medical waste.
• Complies with regulations in handling deceased, notifies authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at scene.
• Reports nature of injury or illness to receiving facility.
• Determines vehicle readiness by checking operator maintainable fluid, fuel and air pressure levels.
• Maintains ambulance in operable condition.
• Ensures cleanliness and organization of ambulance, its equipment and supplies.
• Must be able to assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications as described in state and local protocol.

Physical Strength Required

• Must be able to lift and move a 50-75 lb. ambulance stretcher with the help of one qualified individual.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 250 pounds with assistance from one other qualified individual.
• Must be able to lift a 175 lb. patient (in various positions, i.e., while lying on the floor, the bed, in an automobile, etc.) with the help of one qualified individual onto a stretcher.

Environmental Conditions

• Must be adaptive to work in all types of weather conditions, including, but not limited to, rain, snow, heat, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Certification, Licensure, Registration: Licensed as an Paramedic by the State Division of Emergency Medical Services and maintained in good standing. Must possess current NYC REMAC certification, and maintain in good standing. Must possess current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS and PALS certifications and maintain in good standing. Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License in state of, and be eligible for driving privileges based on current policies and procedures.
• Analytical Demands: Must be able to think and act calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
• Contact With Others: Co-workers, clients, patients and families, medical personnel. Must be able to write, read and speak English fluently.
• Minimum Education: Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent. Where applicable and as required must maintain Continuing Education.
