Job Description

This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a crew of personnel engaged in the delivery of Paramedic-level emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations. This position has direct supervision over an assigned crew of personnel.

Job Duties

  • Inspects the cleanliness and working condition of ambulance on a daily basis; checks fluids, lights, electronic systems, and controls; ensures that maps, protocol books, and appropriate forms are on board; restocks all medical supplies and ensures that all monitors and equipment are operational.
  • Completes required reports and medical records.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations; provides training to staff; ensures crew members maintain required certifications; reviews and updates medical treatment protocols.
  • Performs related duties.
  • Attends public functions to provide emergency medical response as needed.
  • Communicates with medical personnel via 2-way radio and telephone regarding injured persons' condition, vitals, and other relevant treatment information.
  • Transports injured or sick persons to appropriate care facility.
  • Serves as liaison between various local agencies, including law enforcement, other first responders, local businesses, and public and private organizations.
  • Assists and/or participates in training exercises and continuing education to maintain certification.
  • Responds to calls for assistance involving emergency medical situations, including cardiac problems, breathing difficulties, childbirth, strokes, seizures, sports and automobile accidents, and other traumatic and medical incidents.
  • Directs, supervises, assigns workloads, and monitors the work of an assigned crew of emergency medical personnel; ensures adequate staffing; enforces department policies and procedures.
  • Provides public safety demonstrations and screenings.
  • Administers medication and therapy or treatment to patients on site or in transit; performs various advanced-level procedures on patients.
  • Obtains medical histories and current event information; determines appropriate aid and response guidelines.
  • Manages emergency scenes and coordinates EMS response.
  • Oversees and audits patient care; prepares feedback and instructions to correct deficiencies.
  • Directs the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and supplies; ensures that emergency vehicles are properly stocked.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE


  • Associates Degree in the field of EMS, Paramedic, or related.
  • One to Three years of work related experience in the EMS Field.
  • Possession of or ability obtain and maintain current State of Iowa EMT-Paramedic certificate / PALS / ACLS / BLS.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain, valid State of Iowa Class D, Type 3 driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of state and federal requirements.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical practices, techniques, and standards.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in the operation of advanced medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the procedures for handling special equipment and patient care items.

Full-time employees are defined as those that are regularly scheduled to work at least 40 hours per week. Full-time employees are eligible for benefits at the 1st of the month following their first 30 days as a Dallas County employee, unless otherwise noted.

  • Health benefits {medical, dental, vision} are offered as a complete health insurance package; however, employees may choose to accept dental and/or vision coverage only for an alternate monthly rate
    • Complete package: Single plan- $25.83/month; Family plan- $245.96/month
    • Dental only: Single plan - $0 (premium covered by the County); Family plan- $27.40/month
    • Vision: Single plan - $0 (premium covered by the County); Family plan - $10.58/month
  • Long Term Disability which covers 66.66% of the employee's monthly salary after a 120 day waiting period - Premium fully paid by the County
  • 11 paid holidays per year
  • Participation in the IPERS retirement plan, beginning the first day of employment
  • Vacation time – Regular, full-time Department Heads/Elected Officials starting at 4.62 hours/pay period (120 hours/year); Regular, full-time employee accrual starting at 3.08 hours/pay period (80 hours/year; Regular, full-time, 24 or 48 hour shift EMS employee accrual starting at 2.31 hours/pay period (60 hours/year)
  • 1 floating holiday per year
  • Vision: Single plan - $0 (premium covered by the County); Family plan - $10.58/month
  • Voluntary Short Term Liability – Premium fully paid by the employee
  • Employee Assistance Program - Premium fully paid by the County
  • Flex Spending Account (pre-tax) – Premium paid by employee. Medical: $2750/year limit; Dependent Care: $5000/year limit
  • Sick time – Regular, full-time employee accrual at 5.54 hours/pay period (144 hours/year); Regular, full-time, 24 or 48 hour shift EMS employee accrual at 7.75 hours/pay period (201.6 hours/year)
  • Dental only: Single plan - $0 (premium covered by the County); Family plan- $27.40/month
  • Complete package: Single plan- $25.83/month; Family plan- $245.96/month
  • Supplemental Term Life Insurance available for the employee and eligible dependents - Premium paid fully by the employee
County sponsored insurance premiums are pre-tax withholdings.

Part time workers do not qualify for insurance unless necessary qualifications are met, however, part-time employees may qualify for IPERS.
