Salary Grade: LG03 Recruitment Range: $48,714.00 - $65,347.00


This position is currently designated as a “hybrid” position which allows for some teleworking from home, however, this position is expected to perform much of its work in the NCDOR headquarters located in downtown Raleigh. The teleworking schedule is at the discretion of management and is driven based on business needs. This position will be eligible for part time telework.


Some overnight state travel may be required. Estimate: less than 20 per year to include conferences and trainings, both internal and external.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of paralegal work and provide specified support to the attorneys within the Department’s Office of General Counsel. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, (i) drafting, reviewing, and approving for form and legality various documents and/or legal instruments, (ii) researching laws and legal precedents, (iii) assisting attorneys with various administrative tasks in the course of performing their duties (e.g., redactions, creation of PowerPoint presentations, etc.), (iv) maintaining lines of communication with other team members to ensure questions are answered and tasks are completed. (v) preparing routine documents for an attorney's/agency general counsel’s approval, (vi) handling complaints and inquiries of a legal nature from the general public, and (vii) presenting findings with preliminary legal analysis subject to professional legal review. Other duties are: directing and coordinating the various law office activities of the Office of General Counsel. This includes, but is not limited to (i) serving as the main point of contact for individuals seeking the assistance of the Office of General Counsel, including working with Office of General Counsel staff to ensure timely response to communications from internal and external constituents, (ii) organizing and maintaining documents related to ongoing and completed matters, (iii) revising and implementing record retention polices for the Office of General Counsel, (iv) assisting with the management of contracts for which the Office of General Counsel is the contract manager, (v) maintaining legal subscriptions and other legal resources needed by the Office of General Counsel, and (vi) assisting Office of General Counsel staff with general administrative tasks. This position assists the General Counsel in routine day to day requests, when necessary, and other special projects. This position will report directly to the Department’s General Counsel.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies
  • Ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods or approach, source material available, and policy and precedent of the office
  • Ability to summarize facts and evidence, and prepare legal instruments
  • Basic knowledge of case, statutory, and common law and judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the roles of evidence

  • Ability to create spreadsheets to capture and analyze data
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training; or Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and five years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
