Job Description
Purpose of Classification


Interns Will Be Exposed To The Following


The City of Boynton Beach’s paid internship program is offered to recently honorably discharged Veterans, currently enrolled or recently graduated high school students. This program also applies to currently enrolled or recently graduated college and graduate-level students. This program offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and a realistic preview of what it is like to work in local government. The City of Boynton Beach is committed to administering a successful, efficient, and inclusive program that will allow interns to make a positive contribution to the community while gaining valuable work experience.


  • Experience networking and professional development opportunities.
  • Have an opportunity to rotate through City departments.
  • Participate in a group project that will be presented to City Management and City Commission.
  • Learn about the mission and vision of the City.
  • Attend periodic lunch and learns with the Human Resources and Risk Management Department. These workshops will teach students interviewing skills, workplace etiquette, public speaking, and financial sustainability and student loan payoff advice.
  • Gain professional experience in local government.


Essential Functions


The City is offering internship opportunities in the following departments and interns will be completing tasks and functions related to their respective departments:


City Manager’s Office


The City Manager’s office provides direction and leadership for the effective and fiscally responsible administration and operation of all municipal services for the City of Boynton Beach and all city departments. This work requires frequent communication and coordination with the City Commissioners and the Mayor.


Development (Planning & Zoning /Community Standards/ Inspections/ Application Intake)


The Development Department provides plan reviews, issues building permits, conducts field inspections, issues certificates of occupancy and use, reviews construction plans and administers the business tax receipt program to ensure conformance of construction in the city with governing building codes.


Events


The Events Division is responsible for creating, coordinating and delivering community events throughout the City. These functions include: contacting vendors, artists, and community groups, seeking sponsorship opportunities from businesses, and planning events from idea to execution.


Finance


The Finance Department provides a wide variety of services including accounting, accounts payable, payroll, budgeting, purchasing, cash management and finance administration.


Fire Rescue and Life Safety Department


The Fire Rescue Department provides emergency care and life safety services that include firefighting and paramedic response to Boynton Beach residents.


Human Resources, Risk Management, Organizational Development, and ADA and Inclusion:


Human Resources is responsible for the City's recruitment, retention, compensation, volunteers, employee benefits and employee and labor relations. Risk Management oversees the administration of the City's Self Insurance Funds and safety programs. Organizational Development is responsible for employee training and development and process improvement. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is responsible for overseeing inclusion and accessibility of the City's programs, events, and services. Work includes providing staff training, reviewing policies and procedures, and working directly with the public.


Innovation Technology Solutions (ITS)


Innovation Technology Solutions (ITS) provides support to all departments in their information technology needs, as well as overseeing the city website. Tasks involve troubleshooting, network management, website development, and providing customer service.


Library


The Library offers opportunities for patrons to learn by loaning books and other media and attending trainings and educational classes on a variety of topics. Work includes assisting patrons checking out materials, stocking shelves, and providing customer service.


Marketing


The Marketing Division is responsible for developing and maintaining the City’s brand and promoting City services. The marketing team also plans, directs and coordinates marketing policies and programs for departments to follow.


Police Department


The City of Boynton Beach Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency that provides protection of property and life within the City and responds to calls for services and emergencies.


Public Information Office


The Public Information Office provides essential information to the public while connecting engaging, and uniting the community through press releases, social media posts, speeches and other materials for public consumption.


Public Works


Public Works is a crucial department that offers City services that include parks maintenance, fleet maintenance, facilities, and solid waste.


Recreation and Parks


The Recreation and Parks Department manages pool programs, arts and culture events, sports leagues, parks and playgrounds, after school and summer programs, facility and pavilion rentals.


Utilities


The Utilities Department is committed to supplying high quality water. Additionally, the department is responsible for the efficient, effective, environmentally-sound disposal of wastewater. This department includes Water Field Operations, Meter Services, Customer Relations, Wastewater, Water Treatment, and Engineering.


Utilities - GIS College Intern


The Selected Intern Will Be Responsible For


The Utilities - GIS Division is responsible for the Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) activities of the Utility, including Geographical Information System (GIS), Transcendent, Iwater, and other systems for the City of Boynton Beach.


  • Works closely with the asset management technician and the ITS Department on the sustenance of the data management systems.
  • Assists the Asset Management Technician with planning, designing, implementing, and supporting Utility GIS application in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Assists in the review and tracking of the organization’s fixed assets.
  • Assists in updating content on the Mcivicapps.com web page.
  • Provides timely response and establish high priority for GIS map and analysis requests.


Minimum Qualifications


Currently enrolled in an accredited university [two (2) year, four (4) year, or graduate-level degree program]; or


Recent graduate [within last three (3) years from an accredited university [two (2) year, four (4) year, or graduate-level degree program].


Applicable To The Utilities GIS Intern ONLY


  • Geographic Information Systems and an Advanced Certificate in Geographic Information Systems Communications, Operations Management, Information Technology, or a related discipline or interdisciplinary program; and
  • Must obtain and maintain a Florida Driver's License
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word and Excel); and
  • Currently enrolled in surveying or closely related college program; and
  • Must be enrolled in a GIS certification, undergraduate or graduate program; and


Supplemental Information


Veterans’ Preference Certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority in the City’s hiring process. Additionally, certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements in employment by the City.


Temporary Employee - No pension deductions, not Full Time benefits.
