Position Function


The primary function of the Outdoor Adventures Coordinator is to assist the Assistant Director of Facilities and Outdoor Programming in carrying out a comprehensive program of recreational activities and services, specifically outdoor programming. This includes program development, fiscal management, and supervision of personnel administering those programs


Salary Grade : 13

Essential Duties And Responsibilities


  • Work collaboratively with other departmental staff to define facility needs and schedule appropriately.
  • Communicate with Outdoor Adventures student staff regarding policies and rules, and schedules.
  • Develop, review, and enforce policies and procedures related to the climbing wall, low-ropes course, and adventure trips.
  • Develop, promote and implement a comprehensive Outdoor Adventures program consisting of adventure trips, outdoor educational clinics, and team building initiatives. This includes the scheduling trips, clinics, and special events.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate Outdoor Adventures student staff. Actively incorporate Departmental Vision, Mission, and Values into staff training and development.
  • Work with the Assistant Director to create, implement and regularly review an ongoing 3 year plan for the Outdoor Adventures program to incorporate Divisional priorities as they relate to the Student Affairs strategic plan and student learning priorities.
  • Work with the Business Services Staff in developing and managing Outdoor Adventures program budgets, payroll, spending, and revenue from external programming.
  • Implement risk management procedures for outdoor adventure programs. Develop and facilitate training for all Outdoor Adventure participants.
  • The Outdoor Adventures Coordinator directly supervises 10 Outdoor Adventures student employees


Minimum Qualifications


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Outdoor recreation, sports management, higher education, or related field


Experience: 2 years managing collegiate outdoor recreation programming or related experience


Preferred Qualifications


Master’s degree in a related field.

  • Ability to foster a positive, cooperative work environment
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication skills and utilization of computers
  • Ability to comply with all policies and regulations of Mississippi State University and enforce policies that apply to University Recreation programs and services
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team
  • Employee development and performance management skills
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement outdoor programs, clinics, and events
  • Ability to supervise and train student employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community


Working Conditions and Physical Effort


Must be able to lead a variety of outdoor adventure trips.


Will be required to work outdoors despite inclement weather conditions when necessary
