Job Purpose:


The Network Engineering group - Outside Plant (OSP) manages the planning, design, and construction of the access network of Hawaiian Telcom. This group designs and details the integration of wireline, copper cable, fiber optics, high-speed internet, video, etc. into Hawaiian Telcom's network to provide voice, data, and video service.


Essential Functions:

  • Meet with and provide OSP design feedback to developers and electrical consultants (5%)
  • Other tasks as related to providing service to customers, resolving trouble or supporting network requirements. (10%)
  • Plan, field, design and issue OSP work orders on a timely basis to meet customer, service or required objectives. (50%)
  • Support the field with respect to questions on issued work orders and in support of trouble. (10%)
  • Meet with customers and prepare customer initiated quotes (5%)
  • Process and respond to Joint Pole applications (20%)

Education:


Four years of College resulting in a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent


Relevant Work Experience:


3 to 5 years in related field


Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Work experience and understanding of:

  • Appropriate applications for various transmission media i.e. copper & fiber cable
  • Demonstrated experience using FCC / PUC Tariffs; NEC/NESC Codes; OSP products and their applications
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, functions and tasks
  • Requires leveraging leadership and a variety of technical skills to work across internal groups as well as with vendors and industry partners to support service offerings and infrastructure capabilities
  • Planning and budget allocation processes
  • Standard accounting practices
  • OSP design practices and construction techniques
  • Conduit systems, duct systems, road improvements, and environmental issues

Supervisory Responsibility:


This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities


Work Environment:

  • Daytime tour of duty
  • Outdoor work may be subject to adverse weather conditions, dirt, dust, noise, fumes, rough terrain, traffic, heat, working in confined spaces, manholes, poles, aerial lifts and platforms, etc.
  • Exposed to high voltage electrical power lines, explosive and/or flammable liquids and gases, oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, lead toxicity and asbestos materials.
  • Able to operate analytical test equipment such as data analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Subject to after hours and callout
  • Occasional scheduled night and weekend work
  • Required to meet multiple priorities and project due dates

Physical Requirements

  • May require identifying and distinguish audible tones/levels and colors
  • Requires standing, sitting, lifting/carrying supplies and training materials up to 40 lbs.
  • May require push/pull heavy objects such as aerial platforms, racking and forming cables
  • Able to operate analytical test equipment such as data analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • May require traveling to various locations and company branches and departments throughout the State of Hawaii in a timely manner so must possess a valid Hawaii State Driver's License
  • Work may be performed at various locations under varying conditions
  • May require working in confined and dark areas for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift, carry, set-up, climb and take down ladders
  • May require lifting and carrying standard extension ladders, tools, and manhole and pullbox covers
  • May require climbing poles and ladders
