Job Title: Organist/Pianist

Reports to: Pastor

FLSA Status: Part-time


Ministerial Charisma

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity, which the Bishop has entrusted to him in shepherding the parishioners of St. Mary, Our Lady of the Lake. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.


Positions employed at St. Mary, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church help to extend the vision of the pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position must follow the direction of the bishop and pastor, and assists the pastor in the performance of his ministry for the good of the Church.


Job Summary and Goals
:

St. Mary, Our Lady of the Lake parish in Lago Vista is seeking an organist/pianist to play for two Masses on Sunday mornings, and if possible, to be available for weddings and funerals as needed. The Sunday Masses are at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. An occasional rehearsal with the cantors may be needed at times, which could take place in between the Sunday Masses.


Major Areas of Responsibility
:

  • Maintaining liturgical norms of the Church and the Diocese, knowing all prohibited songs for Mass, and updating all proper songs allowed to be sung in the Catholic Masses,
  • Responsible to play organ/piano of two Sunday Masses: 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
:

Fully initiated, practicing Catholic preferred. Good communication and organizational skills; basic computer skills; and, the ability to work well with others is required. Overall dependability/accessibility is very important. Must be proficient in piano and organ keyboards. Having skill of singing/cantoring referred. Must have a basic knowledge of the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church and the ability to integrate this with musical skills. Ability to lead cantors at rehearsal. The ability to work flexible work hours and weekends required.


Duties


Eucharistic Celebrations - 52 Sundays

  • Leading: 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.


Office hour: be present in the office/church for 2-5 hours weekly.

  • For meetings with staff and with liturgical committees to prepare for special liturgical occasions.
  • For music selection
  • For practice
  • For communication with pastor and choir members and office staff.


Personal practice time


Continuing Education: Chanting, singing, musical workshop etc..


Special occasions/events as notified by pastor*

  • Ash Wednesday
  • Other special events
  • Triduum Celebrations: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil
  • Other Holy Days of Obligation (few times a year)
  • Christmas when it does not fall on a Sunday


Funerals (honorarium given by family, or notified by pastor*)


Wedding: arrangements with the wedding couple.
