Overview:
Americas Styrenics is a leading integrated producer of styrene monomer and polystyrene.
This position, located in St. James, Louisiana, operates assigned equipment and areas of the plant in a safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner. This position works on one of four operating shifts, receives work direction from the assigned Lead or Shift Activity Coordinator. The position is required to work 12-hour rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, work overtime as needed and provide standby callout coverage.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Straps tanks and performs gauging calculations.
  • Operates valves, pumps, filters, heat exchangers, and other chemical plant equipment.
  • Prepares equipment and issues detailed Safe Work Permits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Follows all plant safety guidelines and policies, including fire-retardant clothing and other personal protective equipment, during the execution of job duties.
  • Participates as an active member of the fire brigade.
  • Writes work notifications to ensure timely equipment repairs.
  • Loads and unloads hazardous chemicals to and from railcars, tank trucks, barges, ships, and other shipping containers.
  • Monitors day to day processes ensuring a safe operation in line with EH&S, quality, production & reliability, and cost objectives.
  • Obtains qualifications to perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs as Repair / NDT personnel to tank cars in alignment with AAR regulations and requirements.
  • Participates in shift relief meetings relaying key process and equipment information.
  • Documents observations and troubleshooting efforts in written logbook entries.
  • Follows procedures for safe startup, shutdown, and operation of equipment.
  • Manages tank inventories to ensure on-time and on-specification deliveries.
  • Performs process and equipment troubleshooting to identify and resolve issues.
  • Communicates effectively with other operators, Shift Leads, and the Shift Activity Coordinator.
  • Monitors performance and health of equipment and processes using field rounds, listening to equipment operation, recording instrument readings, and catching samples.

Job Requirements/Education/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-year associate degree in Process Technology.
  • Below experience also considered:
  • 3 years' experience in operations or maintenance at an industrial manufacturing facility.
  • Miliary rank of E4 or higher and discharged from the military within the last 2 years with Military Occupational Specialty in: Instrumentation, Electrical, Process Operations, Mechanical, or related disciplines.

Other Requirements (with or without accommodations):

  • Must be willing and able to wear an air-purifying respirator and SCBA.
  • Must be willing and able to work at heights above 25 feet by climbing stairs and vertical ladders.
  • Requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, reaching and rapid work pace, etc.
  • Works outside, year-round under various weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to work in tight, enclosed, or confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
  • Stands and walks for extended periods of time.

Additional Requirements:

  • Good interpersonal skills (develops positive working relationships with co-workers at all levels and within all organizations at the facility)
  • Commitment to personal safety.
  • Must successfully complete required skills assessment: applied math, applied technology, reading for information, locating information and Console Operator Basic Requirement Assessment (COBRA).
  • Must be able to complete the requirements of the formal operator training program.
  • Effective written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have valid TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) or be able to secure one within 30 days.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis now and in the future without requiring sponsorship.

Other Information:

  • Americas Styrenics will conduct interviews and the successful candidates must complete a medical screening, functional capacity evaluation, background check, and drug screen prior to employment.
  • To attend to emergencies, successful candidate’s primary residence must be within a defined 55-mile radius of the St. James plant or must be willing to relocate to defined 55-mile radius without relocation assistance.
Relocation is not available with this position.
