Operating Engineer - Evening - Weekends

The Operating Engineer ensures the safe operation of all high pressure boilers and related auxiliary equipment. To fire boilers and control generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating buildings and providing hot water; maintain emergency power generators and auxiliary equipment; and, provide a comfortable physical environment for the Hospital. Supervised by Department Foreman. Provides work direction to Mechanic. Has regular contact with Hospital management and staff. Tours boiler room to observe operating equipment, meters, and gauges to insure that operation is in accord with specified instructions. Manipulates valves to control the flow of water and fuel, and to increase or decrease steam pressure as required. Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunction when necessary. Notifies Foreman when major repairs or assistance is required. Records on log sheet and in logbook the meter, gauge, and graph readings and repair work performed. Tests and treats the boiler water daily using specific chemicals. Performs maintenance and repairs on high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment such as steam lancing of tubes, cleaning and scraping of boiler drum, repairing and replacing fire brick in fire box, replacing of man and hand hole gaskets, replacing valve and gauges, cleaning of heat exchanger, and over-hauling of feed water and fuel pumps.

This is a full time evening, Wednesday to Sunday 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, position located at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital / Westchester Behavioral Health Center.

Required Criteria

• Strong verbal and written communications skills essential
• Must possess a current City of White Plains 2nd class High Pressure/Steam Boiler Operator license, or a current 2nd class High Pressure/Steam Boiler Operator license and be able to meet city of White Plains’ requirements to obtain City of White Plains 2nd class Stationary Engineer’s license at next available test date
• Ability to form perception, numerical ability, motor coordination and manual dexterity
• Minimum two years experience on high pressure boilers as a licensed Stationary Engineer and basic working knowledge of all others trades
• High School or Trade School diploma or comparable work experience

Preferred Criteria

• Refrigeration License
