Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to provide surveillance and epidemiology data to develop, plan, implement and evaluate healthy eating, physical activity and obesity prevention efforts for the Obesity, Nutrition and Physical Activity (ONAPA) program. Support provided by the Epidemiologist/Evaluator position Includes: 1) develop sampling methodology, analyze and Interpret data, and develop and write appropriate reports for the Department's annual statewide childhood obesity update; 2) collect and analyze all program data and disseminate results of surveillance, data analysis and other data products or Initiatives, to program staff and state and local partners In easily understandable terms and formats; 3) bring a data and public health perspective to ONAPA's strategic planning and program development efforts; 4) develop and write reports such as ONAPA legislative fact sheets, Healthy Kids Healthy Community (HKHC ) county/tribal fact sheets, Department of Health performance measure reports, and other reports and fact sheets; S) assist In the development of Issue briefs, presentations, and GIS maps for community and state partners and policy makers; 6) provide on-going training and support to ONAPA program staff and contractors on Results Based Accountability (RBA), a tool used to collect and analyze data, measure and report program progress, and for program Improvement; 7) analyze, Interpret, evaluate and disseminate selected program data to determine program effectiveness as appropriate; 8) oversee writing oversee writing required semi-annual and annual federal grant reports; and 9) respond to data requests from public health and community based organizations.

Who are the customers?

ONAPA program staff, federal funders, state and local partners, state agencies, policy makers, community-based organizations, New Mexicans

Ideal Candidate

Master's degree in Public Health with focus on Epidemiology and three (3) years experience in Public Health that includes designing tools for data collection, data collection, analysis, reporting, and using data for program evaluation.
2) Experience and expertise in multiple statistical analysis programs Including SAS, STATA, and R
3) Experience and expertise In GIS mapping
4) Experience writing and designing reports for multiple audiences and federal grants
5) Experience giving public presentations on program data, outcomes, and successes to multiple audiences

Minimum Qualification

Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VTD) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs (bending, stooping and reaching) and meet numerous deadlines.
