Position Summary

The Nurse Navigator will provide clinical and operational support to the surgeons and patients. They will be the liaison between the General & Gastrointestinal Surgery Division and the Surgical Specialties Clinic and is the primary contact for referring physicians and patients, works closely with the providers to ensure the appropriate patients are scheduled with the appropriate tests (imagin, laboratory etc.) and will resolve patient concerns and issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate provider schedules between the clinics *2ACC, SRMC, MLK
  • All other miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.
  • Review clinic schedules to ensure patient have the lab tests, imaging, medical records etc. required for the clinic visit
  • Proactively coordinates and communicates with various departments (both external and internal) to coordinate services, resolve operation issues, and improve quality of patient care.
  • Review internal/external ad hocs/ referral requests admin coordinate with centralized scheduling to appropriately schedule patient based on provider preference, acuity or illness etc.
  • Work closely with the Clinic Unit Director to improve efficiency and patient flow
  • Work closely with clinic director to improve efficiency and patient flow.
  • Serves as a liaison between providers, patients and staff by assisting with education needs, problem resolutions and health management
  • Serve as the primary contact for external/internal referring providers: appoint patients, maintain communications regarding patients’ status, build relationships with providers and staff
  • Serves as clinical resource, ensuring quality patient care that meets national and quality standards

Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
  • Must provide proof of varicella immunity or obtain varicella vaccination within 90 days of employment.
  • A post-offer, pre-employment physical examination/medical history check may be a requirement for some positions.
  • May be required to complete department-specific professional development activities.
  • CPR Certified.
  • Fingerprinting, and subsequent clearance, is required for this position.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Nursing; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures and standards
  • Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures
  • Demonstrated nursing skills in area of specialty
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills
  • Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative, customer service oriented team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Provides leadership through identifying problems and opportunities for improvements, implementation, planning and evaluation

Additional Requirements
Bachelors degree in Nursing; at least 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practive compact with New Mexico. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
