Job Description

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares, measures and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in diagnostic and therapeutic studies.
  • Assists in Clinical instruction for Radiology and Nursing students in the field of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Assists Nuclear Medicine Supervisor in maintaining budgetary constraints
  • Maintains patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from newborn to elderly.
  • Is Responsible for direct patient safety and following all procedural protocols. Maintains all federal, state, and local regulatory agency requirements.
  • Performs and assists with nuclear medicine and PET/CT Exams.
  • Is able to perform Regional Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT Support at Multiple contract sites as a contract Technologist.
  • Maintains all Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO ) and American College of Radiology ( ACR ) accreditation requirements.
  • Focuses on performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities.

Essential Duties:
1. Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceuticals and materials; calculates and administers doses under the direct supervision of a Radiologist.
2. Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
3. Calibrates equipment.
4. Performs diagnostic Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT exams on patients as prescribed by physician.
5. Uses Nuclear Scintillation Cameras, CT and PET/CT scanners for detection and Attenuation correction of radiation emitted to produce image of organ on PACs archival system.
6. Measures radioactivity using Geiger counters, scalers and scintillation detectors.
7. Follows radiation safety techniques and policies in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
8. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
9. Instructs and prepares patient for exams.
10. Demonstrates the ability to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure - makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
11. Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing exams.
12. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
13. Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
14. Takes call according to monthly schedule and after regular department hours. Responds to calls in a timely manner.
15. Compiles and maintains quality assurance information. (i.e., log books)
16. Interacts professionally with patient/family.
17. Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
Education and Experience:
1. CNMT or ARRT(N) certification required
2. Licensed by the State of Maine as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
3. Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification or Due within one month of expiration required.
4. Current DOT HAZMAT training certificate renewable every three years.
