Job Description

We are seeking a Neuro-Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD



This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

  1. Coordinate training of users in applying data and analysis methods for their research studies
  2. Train laboratory staff to independently run the experiments and analyze the data
  3. Train staff in a wide variety of techniques used in the laboratory
  4. Produce research reports and regularly communicate results to staff and collaborators
  5. Perform scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of grant applications proposal from a programmatic viewpoint
  6. Prepare information for and attend advisory, review committee and panel meetings; respond to issues and concerns about specific applications proposal pertaining to assigned program area
  7. Serve as an advisor to IC leadership in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of bioinformatics and genomic data science applications and solutions
  8. Organize structured approach to setting up the recording system in the patients room so neurophysiological data is in the appropriate format and is of sufficient quality for subsequent processing and maintain electrophysiology recording equipment for patient testing
  9. Organize, and maintain electrophysiology recording equipment for patient testing
  10. Organize patient testing, perform patient testing tasks, and train new lab personnel on patient testing
  11. Lead the development and/or improvement of hardware and software infrastructure for capturing, sorting, and organizing neural activity from individual neurons action potentials recorded using implanted microelectrode arrays
  12. Lead the development and/or improvement of software infrastructure for acquiring neurophysiological data in real-time
  13. Coordinate with the lab data engineer to develop and maintain software infrastructure for collecting and maintaining human intracranial neural data
  14. Lead the development and/or improvement of hardware and software infrastructure for providing targeted electrical stimulation of the human brain using a commercially avail-able stimulation device
  15. Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists
  16. Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments
  17. Review scientific data to determine if a research program can be developed around an idea or data package
  18. Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment
  19. Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory
  20. Operate, troubleshoot and train others to use laboratory equipment and software
  21. Provide advice and assistance to users in designing experiments, using instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis, and preparing figures for publication
  22. Participate in the laboratory review of future proposals for resource allocations
  23. Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts
  24. Conduct bioinformatics data analyses and statistical analyses; prepare data for abstracts and manuscripts
  25. Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments
  26. Responsible for data management for all processed compounds
  27. Must ensure project data quality; analyze and interpret project data
  28. Coordinate with IT staff on all software issues specific to the chemistry group and on all computer problems
  29. Identify and advise IC leadership on opportunities and program areas, research gaps and relevant program needs; make recommendations for consideration
  30. Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups conferences
  31. Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals
  32. Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals; prepare PowerPoint presentations as appropriate
  33. Give posters and presentations detailing work at regional and national scientific meetings
  34. Present results of clinical and experimental research at recognized scientific meetings by lectures and exhibits poster sessions



REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  1. Master’s Degree in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields
  2. Computer skills including Matlab, Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
  3. Skills in computer hardware, neurophysiology, use maintenance and engineering of physiological recording equipment.
  4. Minimum of two (2) years of experience with electrophysiological recording
  5. Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills
  6. Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  7. Experience with Software such as MATLAB
