This position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by maintaining a working knowledge of computer systems, tools, equipment, and material necessary to install, maintain and repair the underground distribution system. The position should be capable of becoming familiar with the day-to-day operations and specifications of the network and distribution underground system. The position must be available to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends, or holidays, to perform work required during planned outages or emergency situations. The position must demonstrate the ability to progress into the Journeyman classification and perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all Company safety rules and procedures.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • A Network Electrician Apprentice services primarily in a training role and assists higher level employees (Network Specialist). Incumbents are expected to develop complex technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with and understand the electrical distribution system by completing applicable L&S modules as outlined on the attached sheet.
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and discretion as to the appropriate manner of handling a variety of situations.
  • Ability to respond to call outs.
  • Assist in constructing, maintaining, and operating the distribution system, and performing customer service work to ensure public safety and customer satisfaction as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete the requirements for Switching and Tagging at the appropriate step.
  • Be capable of assisting in the termination of underground conductors in new underground facilities (e.g. PMHs, single/three phase pad-mounted transformers, pedestals, troughs, CT cabinets, etc.) and energize equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate bucket, digger derrick truck, pressure digger, backhoe, forklift, and other aerial devices.
  • Demonstrates ability to pass panel reviews by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression.
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete maintenance/construction activities on all network equipment.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices.
  • Be capable of assisting in the repair or replace of pad mounted equipment (e.g. PMHs, single/three phase pad mounted transformers, pedestals, enclosures, etc.).
  • Maintain an awareness of costs and operate within Company Guidelines, Policies, Specifications and Procedures.
  • Can organize construction and maintenance work and create over all implantation/maintenance plans at the appropriate step.
  • Able to perform emergency rescue and support CPR efforts for fellow workers once certified.
  • Assist in troubleshooting, locating, grounding, and repairing underground cables and re-energizing equipment after repairs have been made. This includes all types of underground cables, including primary, secondary and streetlight cables.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of Human Performance practices.
  • Able to deal with changing priorities or differing situations encountered in the work environment.
  • Demonstrate behaviors and interpersonal skills necessary to work within a team.
  • Know, adhere to, and promote personal and work group safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Demonstrates advance verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to learn appropriate operating computer systems, tools, equipment (e.g. Dynatel fault finder, Von Thumper & Von First Response Unit, etc.), and vehicles (e.g. backhoe, digger derrick, etc.).
  • Must have ability to learn and retain knowledge of related construction specifications and applicable OSHA regulations (trenching, excavating, confined spaces).
Work Environment
  • Requires ability to travel and stay overnight to various locations and work extended hours to assist in major storm restoration.
  • Work environment ranges from indoors to outside in varying degrees of heat and cold weather conditions
  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • Must reside within 60 minutes of assigned Operations Center within 90 days.
  • Subject to work in confined and/or enclosed spaces, (manholes, vaults, etc.)
  • Position is subject to callouts and generally available at others times as needed, demonstrate the ability to work independently, and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions to perform work required during planned and emergency outages.

If you submit a request for your safety performance history but do not make arrangements to pick up or receive such requested records within thirty (30) days of Duke Energy making such information available to you, you waive your request.
Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Valid driver’s license
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.)
  • Experience with law enforcement, fire department, farming, or fence building
  • Experience in utility, electrical, telephone, cable tv, plumbing, tree trimming, building/construction, or cell towers
  • Military experience in a related field.
  • Valid Class A CDL
Specific Requirements
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket on a line truck.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment (VAL)
  • Ability to obtain Class A CDL
  • Ability to frequently and respectively bend/stoop/squat
  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
  • Position has on-call responsibilities as scheduled and generally available at others times as needed, demonstrate the ability to work independently, and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions to perform work required during planned and emergency outages.
  • Ability to obtain Respirator Clearance
  • Demonstrate ability to complete the Duke Energy Florida Network Electrician Apprentice program.
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
