Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute to Oregon’s fisheries and work at the beautiful Oregon coast? Assist marine science professionals with Oregon’s nearshore fisheries research by providing analytical and field support.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Charleston (or Newport).
This is a full time, Limited Duration position with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2023 through February 05, 2025.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least February 05, 2025. What you will do:
Assist with data collection during surveys, monitoring, and research activities as a member of the project team:
  • Assist collaborators with periodic deployment, maintenance, and recovery of autonomous sensors and mooring systems to generate time-series measurements of physical oceanographic parameters at strategic study sites.
  • Provide technical assistance with underwater surveys conducted with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in deep-water rocky habitats, including maintenance, troubleshooting, and cleaning of the ROV;
  • Assist with compilation of datasets, QA/QC procedures, and archival of spatial information (GPS coordinates), and metadata associated with SCUBA and ROV surveys in underwater habitats;
  • Participate in day trips at sea aboard small vessels to collect data, complete surveys, and assist with research activities;
  • Coordinate work with project sub-contractors to support underwater SCUBA surveys of rocky reef habitats and communities, including seaweeds, kelp, sea urchins, sea stars, abalone, and other marine organisms;
  • Assist collaborators with unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveys, aerial photography flights, and/or remote sensing surveys of kelp canopies;
  • Periodically collect and process biomass samples from kelp beds, and generate measurements of bulb density, blade length/width, etc. within kelp canopies;
Compile project datasets, maintain databases, and assemble information from field surveys and research activities:
  • Assist with the cataloging, re-formatting, and pre-processing of underwater video files.
  • Assist with data management and follow guidelines and procedures to ensure timely data acquisition, data entry, QA/QC steps, maintenance, information access, and data archival;
  • Assist with the review and processing of ROV data streams and other underwater video files, including generation of data regarding species, density, and body size for sea urchins, sea stars, and other priority marine organisms;
  • Assist with the processing of ROV datasets to characterize positional accuracy and mapping of shallow-water bathymetry in the study areas.
  • Solicit and receive data from project collaborators, conduct QA/QC checks, and data entry into databases;
Participate in the generation of project updates and technical reports:
  • Periodically generate data summaries, tables, graphics, charts, maps, figures, and photos for use in project updates, blogs, social media, and project reports;
  • Develop written summaries and social media communications to provide outreach about project activities.

Working Conditions
Frequent (daily, bi-weekly, monthly) visits to study areas at irregular hours which at times involves exposure to inclement weather. Project activities will occur throughout the year, and work may occur at marinas, docks, and boat launches to load/unload boats and vehicles. Periodic work activities around moving equipment such as boats, trailers, forklifts etc. at locations where surfaces are uneven, wet, and may be slippery. Lifting gear and equipment weighing 15 to 25 pounds is required.
  • Position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, they must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment.
  • This position requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Occasional work on vessels at sea where difficult ocean conditions may occur.
  • Work at computer entering data, analyzing data, and writing reports daily.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
  • Monthly trips via car to attend meetings in distant ports, and daily use of vehicle.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR
  • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.
Requested Skills:
  • Processing, and analyzing data from underwater camera systems
  • Working at-sea for multiple days at a time
  • Collecting, processing, and analyzing scientific echo sounder (not acoustic telemetry) data
  • Experience maintaining and deploying underwater camera systems
