THE POSITION

The State Museum of Pennsylvania is looking for a skilled and motivated person to provide professional collections management services. In addition, the Museum Registrar assists in updating and managing the collections management system. The position reports to the supervisor of the collections management section. A Museum Registrar administers the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission’s (PHMC) collections management system, ARGUS.net. This position collaborates with all stakeholders to communicate and provide support for continued implementation and publication of collection information; assists Collections Management team with processing new collections, cataloging, inventorying, identifying, describing, lending, borrowing, and deaccessioning of objects and specimens from The State Museum of Pennsylvania and all PHMC Historic Sites and Museums. Work includes creating and maintaining appropriate hard-copy and digital records for agency collections including preparing and distributing written documentation; responding to staff and public requests for the reproduction of collection images, working cooperatively with bureau staff, following established procedures, ensuring PHMC interests are legally and fairly represented, and revenue is accurately collected and deposited. A Museum Registrar performs other duties as required; is responsible to be familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; immediately report all workplace injuries or incidents to their supervisor; and to immediately correct any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 2 days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Work hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A master’s degree in Museum Studies, American Studies, American History, or related field.
  • One year of professional museum registration or curatorial work experience; or

Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

This position is a_ full-time non-exempt position _and requires some weekend and evening hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will occasionally help with outreach programs that take place off-site.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Regularly help with seasonal special events. This could include, but is not limited to, decorating and de-decorating the Museum, giving tours, selling tickets, helping with refreshments, being an elf or dressing as a bunny, etc.
  • Will occasionally act as a store cashier (sell tickets and merchandise).
  • Will act as a tour guide or gallery attendant to ensure visitors have a complete experience and to ensure the safety of visitors and our collection and facilities.
  • Regularly help with reservations for birthday parties, groups (adult and education), Operators for an Hour, etc. This will include, but is not limited to, coordinating with visitors, creating roll signs, creating tickets, creating certificates, ensuring calendars are accurate, etc.
  • Will occasionally act as an educational programming assistant (help with field trips, summer camps, scout groups, etc.).
  • Regularly help the daily operating crew with conductor duties, help tour guides with giving tours, and ensuring that everyone gets a lunch break.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Appropriate combination of education and work experience in the areas relating to the design, development and delivery of education programs that is sufficient to indicate the individual’s ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Education or another discipline is required.
  • Possess, or obtain in a timely manner, a working knowledge of the technologies that the Museum provides to support the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Has good verbal and written communications skills.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE HIRED AND MAINTAIN THE POSITION:

  • Obtain and maintain the appropriate background check clearances as defined in the Museum’s policy for Volunteer and Employee Background Checks.
  • Provide own uniform and/or other appropriate clothing and equipment.
  • Be able to work at locations other than the Museum, when necessary, to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

This is a full-time non-exempt position that reports to the Director, Visitor Experience. It is expected that this position will work an average of 40 hours per week, including weekend and evening hours when there is a high level of volunteer activity. The number of hours can vary depending upon the needs of the position.
