SUMMARY
Municipal Court Probation Officer IIs are responsible for conducting evaluations and implementing and overseeing court-ordered probation activities for adult offenders. Employees in this job class monitor probationers’ use of alcohol and/or drugs and needs per a court order to coordinate the placement of probationers in appropriate community service and/or rehabilitation programs as an alternative sentencing program. Employees maintain contact with probationers to ensure compliance with court orders, attend court hearings, prepare various documentation, develop relationships with community resources, and attend professional development events. Work is performed in an office and courtroom setting. Municipal Court Probation Officer IIs do not have permanent supervisory responsibilities and work under the direct supervision of the Municipal Court Administrator, Municipal Court Probation Administrator, presiding judge, and general direction of the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Performs administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files are accurate.
Develops personalized case management plans by recommending treatment referrals, community-based referrals, and new probation orders to help probationers succeed.
Prepares case recommendations for the judge by attending court sessions/hearings, preparing reports, and providing compliance updates on probationers to help the judge make informed decisions about the probationer's case.
Completes intake procedures by reviewing probationers’ background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
Serves as a liaison for the department by developing relationships, attending meetings, communicating with courts, and educating the community to coordinate services and resources.
Monitors probationers through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Willing to submit to a criminal background check.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Driver's license.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social work, counseling, criminal justice or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Qualifications are examples of experience and education considered to be highly desirable by hiring agencies.
  • Court Referral Officer Certification.

  • Experience working with alcoholism, drug abuse counseling, or law enforcement.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
  • Knowledge of balanced and restorative justice principles, rehabilitation, probation, and social casework.
  • Knowledge of the Court Referral Program processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations for dealing with confidential case material.
  • Knowledge of the implementation, operation and activities of a random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Knowledge of general legal terminology.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures and protocols for providing testimony (e.g., when you can/cannot speak or answer).
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of drug/alcohol abuse and addiction as they relate to the needs, attitudes and behavioral problems of the abuser.
  • Knowledge of Code of Alabama, Title 15 (Criminal Procedure).
  • Knowledge of legal and court procedures, court rules and statutes which apply to alcohol and drug abuse programs.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing parole and probation (e.g., weapons, associations, drugs, etc.).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in office settings as well as courtroom settings. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Incumbents may be exposed to bodily fluids such as urine.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
