These range from optical microscopy to scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and include a variety of state-of-the-art instruments and sample preparation capabilities, including:
  • Glovebox sample preparation with transfer devices enabling inert transfer of samples between the glovebox, ion mills, and electron microscopes.
  • Cameca SXFive-Tactis Microprobe
  • ThermoFisher Scientific Themis 300 probe-corrected S/TEM with Super-X EDS detectors, dual-EELS, precession diffraction, scanning nanobeam diffraction (4D-STEM), and DPC detectors.
  • Hitachi FLEXSEM
  • Phenom XL Desktop SEM
  • Gatan PIPS II and PECS II argon ion mills
  • ThermoFisher Scientific FIB/SEM, including EBSD / EDS / WDS / 3D characterization capabilities and small sample fabrication.
  • ThermoFisher Scientific Hydra plasma FIB, including EDS, EBSD, ToF-SIMS, and four plasma species.
  • Pharos Desktop SEM

Responsibilities for the selected candidate will include:
  • Integrate with the group's current technical work primarily focused on plutonium microscopy.
  • Serve as an authority in technical decision-making and direction at an institutional level and can effectively interact and communicate with senior-level management.
  • Provide technical direction to multiple teams for Laboratory-wide initiatives.
  • Design, direct, and lead materials science research using the group's microscopy capabilities.
  • Builds Laboratory-wide teams and serve as a technical resource and mentor.
  • Serves as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership within the Laboratory.
  • Build and lead effective teams to conduct plutonium research within nuclear facilities.
  • Provide leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing new technical capabilities for the team and group.
  • Lead the development of new strategic initiative.
  • Lead the development and preparation of proposals, work packages, and new initiatives that enhance the technical capabilities within the group.
  • Maintain a strong national and international reputation through active participation in a technical field.
