Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to enhance the learning of students
  • Serves as a role model for students and peers
  • Abides by all policies and rules of the school and district, including, but not limited to: workday arrival/departure times and schedules, process for requests for absence/leave, and employee dress code
  • Follows the chain-of-command for directing complaints or concerns
  • Analyzes situations, determines possible options, and makes appropriate decisions based on the data
  • Displays professionalism during and actively participates in required staff/PLC meetings, professional development sessions, and student academic meetings, including meetings for exceptional children
  • Responds to concerns and inquiries from parents in a timely and professional manner
  • Manages instructional time and student behavior
  • Emergency lesson plans prepared and in visible location in the case of an unforeseen absence
  • Motivates students in positive ways
  • Other duties assigned by Principal or supervisors
  • Completes informed, well-prepared lesson plans prior to instruction that demonstrate use of available student data and reflects upon delivery of plans to adjust for student needs
  • Completes all school and district reports and submits in a timely manner
  • Uses a variety of equipment and classroom tools
  • Performs non-instructional and extracurricular duties, as assigned, including, but not limited to: bus duty, cafeteria supervision, playground duty, extracurricular activities supervision (exception for beginning teachers—refer to BTSP plan), and committee assignments
  • Plans, coordinates, and continuously improves instruction
  • Prepares substitute teacher plans that include detailed activities for all classes during the known absence period

  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners
  • Monitors student performance
  • Meets the requirements to maintain licensure in the area of the teaching assignment
  • Avoids instigation of, or participation in, confrontations with peers that disrupt the educational environment
  • Actively seeks clarification concerning job expectations, if needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand and walk and required to sit for extended periods of time, bending and stooping at times.
  • Visual acuity to prepare data, work with various record types, and do extensive reading and/or research
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc.
  • Physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of touching, hearing, talking, and repetitive motions.


Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated based on the NC Educator Evaluation Standards for Teachers and Columbus County Schools Board of Education policies on evaluation of employees.


Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Hold or be eligible to hold NC Educator License in specified subject area
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an approved education program
