Job Summary
The Department of Microbiology is seeking a BioHealth Sciences Advisor. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The incumbent in this position will help us advance and equalize student success to achieve our broader university mission of producing skilled graduates who are critical thinkers and who will actively contribute to discovery and advancement of knowledge that will benefit communities within Oregon and around the world. Persons in this position are expected to support and implement organizational and strategic plans established by the leadership, faculty and staff of the department, and be responsive to guidance from the College of Science advising team.

The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising for both on-campus and distance-degree (Ecampus) undergraduate students in the department of Microbiology pursing majors in Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences. The incumbent in this position will work with an experienced team of advisors, and will be expected to be knowledgeable about and capable of advising students regarding choices between the two programs. The Microbiology undergraduate student population also includes students with interests in pursuing careers and advanced degrees in the Health Sciences field. Contact with students occurs in multiple formats including phone, email, and video-conferencing correspondence, as well as in-person advising as part of individual, group, and classroom settings. Advising responsibilities will include support for orientation courses which provide students with the resources to be successful in their academic career at OSU and in their chosen profession.

Key Responsibilities
55% Advise and mentor undergraduate students in the department of Microbiology for academic success:
  • Orient new incoming first-year and transfer students to university and department procedures, resources and support, which includes organizing and participating in START sessions.
  • Guide students to campus resources and special services available to them; refer students to resources that can enhance or supplement their academic or personal experience.
  • Assist students in defining and developing expressed educational, career, and life plans, and promote learning opportunities that help students define or meet these goals.
  • Monitor progress toward student educational and career goals.
  • Assist students with course selection and registration, career counseling, resolving problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, mentoring students in negative standing, enforcing university and college academic standards, suggesting corrective actions when necessary.
  • Develop a purposeful relationship with and be an advocate for student advisees.
  • Provide one-on-one academic advising to students in the Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences undergraduate degree programs on baccalaureate core and major requirements related to degree completion.
  • Interpret, explain, and provide timely and accurate educational information regarding institutional policies, procedures and requirements.

20% Health Professions Advising
  • Provide one-on-one health professions advising to students in the Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences undergraduate degree programs who are on a health professional’s program track and seeking admissions to limited entry health professions programs (Pre-Med, Pre-Physician’s Assistant, Pre-Dental, Pre-Clinical Lab Science, etc.).
  • Cultivate expertise on health professions programs, admissions requirements and course prerequisites, and experience/skill building.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and conferences; maintain membership with professional organizations such as NAAHP, WAAHP, etc.
  • Guide students through various professional program application processes, collecting letters of recommendation, uploading electronic documents, advising students on completing health professions admissions exams (MCAT, DAT, PCAT, etc.).
  • Write letters of recommendation.

15% Advising Administration
  • Attend professional development workshops and conferences.
  • Cultivate expertise on shared technological resources that are part of the students’ academic journeys.
  • Facilitate discipline specific orientation courses.
  • Engage in proactive student outreach and intervention strategies designed to improve undergraduate academic success and student persistence.
  • Collaborate with dept. curriculum council, faculty, campus partners, and college by providing requested data, recommendations, feedback regarding course access and barriers to student success.
  • Participate in department faculty and advising meetings, college and university advising meetings, and other necessary meetings as required or assigned.
  • Prepare and maintain advising materials such as programs, checklists, newsletters, and websites.

10% Service to Unit and Other Duties as Assigned
  • Advise student organizations/clubs with an interest in health sciences (e.g., the BHS club).
  • Communicate with prospective students and families about department and degree programs and offerings. Represent the COS, SLS and Department of Microbiology in recruitment and retention efforts. Actively recruit students through participation in university and college-sponsored programs and events, and communicate with prospective students in person or via phone/email.
  • Serve on Microbiology, COS, and/or University committees as assigned to support the Department of Microbiology in efforts to serve and support undergraduate students.


What You Will Need
  • Ability to use MS Office Suite including Outlook, Word (mail merges, basic formatting), Excel (filtering data, Vlook-up, basic excel formulas and functions).
  • Ability to understand, follow, and interpret policies, procedures, rules & regulations.
  • Experience participating in organizing or coordinating programs, planning events, preparing advising materials and resources, presenting workshops, etc. either as a member of a team or independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (e.g., attention to detail, proofreading for accuracy, consistency, ability to lead presentations, interviewing skills, etc.).
  • A demonstrated involvement in promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Two (2) years of full-time professional experience in undergraduate academic advising, or counseling in a college or university setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university at the time of application.

What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience with Web for Advisors, MyDegrees, CORE, Banner or other advising and student services technologies.
  • Previous professional experience in a career field related to life sciences.
  • Knowledge related to application and admissions processes to health professional schools, such as medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.
  • Experience with student management software and databases.
  • Ability to use online file storage systems such as Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive.
  • Experience supporting, guiding, or advising international and/or distance-degree students.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in fields such as General Science or Life Sciences degrees (e.g., Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Molecular Biology, Zoology), and/or master’s degree in Sciences, Student Services-related areas, or Education.


Working Conditions / Work Schedule
