Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Counselor provides psychotherapy sessions and campus education on mental health issues to Newberry College students on a full-time basis. The Counselor assists the student in identifying their issues or problems, aids in setting goals to overcome the problem, and lends support as the goals are reached and changes are made.



JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Any other tasks as assigned by the Director of Health and Counseling Services the Dean of Students, or the College President.
  • Interface with students, faculty, and staff as indicated for case management.
  • Meet goals and objectives are communicated in the College’s performance Review.
  • Maintain current professional liability insurance and SC professional license.
  • Provide individual psychotherapy sessions to address DSM-5 conditions and related mental health problems with appropriate documentation and adherence to SC State Mental Health Laws and HIPPA.
  • Organize seminars and outreach programming/events related to mental health issues for Fall and Spring semester in collaboration with the Direct of Health and Counseling Services.
  • Effective stewardship of the College’s financial resources.
  • Remain current of SACS criteria and ensure compliance in area of control.
  • Schedule counseling session with college students requesting services.
  • Responsible for developing close, working relationships with student affairs professions, faculty, and administration.
  • Make referrals appropriate to student needs with documentation to the Center for Student Success and Disability Services, to College physician, the Emergency Room, and community resources.
  • Provide group therapy sessions as needed.
  • Follow the Health and Counseling Services office protocol and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Provide data to the Director of Health and Counseling Services, including total students served, referrals to the physician, and all external referrals as requested.


EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION
Required: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field from an Accredited College or University. Licensed within the state of South Carolina to practice psychotherapy/counseling services, Licensed Independent Social Worker-Clinical Practice, or Licensed Professional Counselor. A minimum of 3 years of experience in the counseling field. Must be knowledgeable regarding HIPPA compliance, SC State Mental Health laws, and DSM-5 criteria. Prior experience working with adolescents/young adults. Basic or Advanced written and oral communication skills. Positive attitude. Ability to support the goals and mission of the college. Basic/advanced knowledge of Microsoft office software. Excellent organization and time management skills. Ability to build effective partnerships within the college community.
Preferred: Minimum of 1 year experience within alcohol and substance abuse treatment in addition to above. Certifications in Addictions Counseling (CAC) in addition to above. Related experience in higher education setting.
