Position Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Natividad is currently accepting applications for Medical Unit Clerk positions for various departments. These positions will perform a wide variety of responsible clerical work related to patient care and other duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

THE SIGNIFICANT DUTIES OF THE POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • Transfers doctors' orders, diet, and therapy instructions to patient charts; notifies nurses and other appropriate personnel of revisions. Makes notations on charts of special medical or consultation charges.
  • May schedule appointments and treatments requiring sufficient understanding of medical conditions to estimate priority sequence, or length of treatment anticipated.
  • Acts as unit receptionist, receiving and relaying telephone messages to medical staff; distributes mail, flowers, and messages to patients and directs visitors.
  • Prepares identification bands.
  • Types a variety of forms and correspondence.
  • Assembles patient charts and prepares other medical record forms required for patient admission, transfer, or dismissal.
  • Provides routine information as requested to staff, patients, visitors, and the public; greets patients and visitors; places calls to doctors, other medical units, and support units as directed.
  • Responds to established emergency procedures.
  • Requisitions a variety of stock, medical equipment, and supplies based on an understanding of medical procedures and unit requirements; receives supplies for the unit.
  • Orders tests and makes appointments, accepts and records lab reports and orders prescriptions.
  • Transcribes physician's orders from patient chart to the proper forms in preparation for verification by professional staff; answers telephone; takes and delivers telephone messages.
  • Deals with patients and their families in situations requiring tact and discretion.
  • Maintains unit files; runs errands and transports supplies, specimens, and other materials as needed; contacts or receives calls from hospital departments, hospitals, doctor's offices, or medical agencies to coordinate or schedule services for patients.
  • Tracks admissions, discharges, transfer, and room changes for census purposes; completes proper forms and records for patient admissions, transfers, discharges, examinations, and testing; may assemble, disassemble, update, and thin patient charts

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills and abilities:


Working knowledge of:
Medical terminology, common medical procedures and the general functions of various hospital departments; and office equipment, filing systems and general clerical practices and procedures, basic mathematical procedures.

Skill and Ability to:
Establish and maintain effective working relations with staff, patients and visitors; Organize and maintain clerical records; Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with person of diverse abilities and temperaments; Work with minimum supervision; Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports; check materials for accuracy and complete.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities is required:

Experience: One (1) year performing general patient care duties equivalent to that of a Nursing Assistant with Monterey County is highly desirable or One (1) year of general clerical experience in a hospital clinic or doctor's office.

Knowledge of: Procedures and policies in admitting, discharging and transferring patients.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
  • Incumbents may be required to work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
  • Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work. Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; and work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
  • Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
  • Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven.
