Summary
The Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience (OCWR) in Michigan Medicine is looking for a mental health therapist to play an important role in the University of Michigan Medical Student Mental Health Program. You will provide confidential, evidence-based mental health counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, and debriefing services that promote the well-being of University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) medical students. Working collaboratively with the medical school faculty and staff and other well-being services within the University, you will serve medical students in a holistic manner and promote their personal and professional well-being. You will report to the Director of OCWR.

Responsibilities*
Mental Health Counseling :
- Identify educational needs, develop, and deliver psychoeducational workshops, trainings, and presentations on subjects such as mental and emotional health in an academic health system, suicide prevention, moral distress, stress, grief/loss, substance use disorders, and compassion practices.
- Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and follow relevant professional standards, ethics, and quality of care.
- Perform a broad range of clinical services using evidence-based therapeutic methods for resolution of psychological and professional concerns, including assessment, conceptualization, intervention, and referrals.
- Provide mitigating interventions when critical incidents affect medical students by providing immediate crisis management, follow-up, and post-incident services.
- Remain knowledgeable of current research and interventions to support medical student well-being, including factors associated with transition to medical school, stress, burnout, trauma, and grief in an academic health care environment.
- Provide individual and group counseling services to UMMS students presenting with a range of mental health and psychological concerns on personal, professional, and academic well-being.
Administrative, Faculty, and Departmental Support:
- Provide consultation to deans, faculty, and leaders on UMMS student mental health, addressing emergent and urgent risks, and make recommendations for risk reduction, case management, referrals, and follow-up.
- Collaborate with UMMS leadership to promote the development of the medical education orientation and curriculum in the area of student mental health and well-being.
- Participate in monthly clinical review meetings, professional development activities, and participate on committees within and outside of OCWR.
Required Qualifications*
- Demonstrated multicultural knowledge, competency, and experience working with diverse communities.
- Proficiency in use of telehealth services.
- 2 or more years of experience with skills in clinical mental health counseling. You must demonstrate relevant experience as a practicing mental health professional.
- Experience with a wide spectrum of evidence-based clinical work in mental health assessment, conceptualization, and crisis management.
- Masters Degree or Ph.D./Psy.D. in a relevant social or behavioral science discipline (e.g. Counseling, Psychology, Social Work).
- Licensed for independent practice in the State of Michigan, or able to obtain license for independent practice in Michigan within 3 months of hire.
Work Locations
May require travel to multiple locations on and off the medical campus. This position may be eligible for hybrid (partially remote) work, but will have onsite responsibilities. Flexible or hybrid work arrangements are reviewed annually and may be subject to change.
